Charlie Methven on metro radio

He didn't actually question it, his question from the reporter was regarding the sizeuf us and the size of Charlton as a club and who needed promotion more, he then answered it with comparing the fact that Charlton are an ex premier league club and the had 40000 there and we only had 36000 which he was right to do, it was in answer to a question, he did say that our fans were quiet and there's weren't which again was absolutely correct everyone said so coming out the ground but as soon as one of the owners say the same thing it then gets blown up
No it wasn’t. Reporter couldn’t even finish his question before he jumped in about attendances. Report said “a club this big shouldn’t be at this level...” and he’s absolutely right. He didn’t insinuate anything about the game.

The interviewer said something along the lines of for a club of our size we need to be out of league 1.

Methven then interrupted before a question could be properly asked and said supporters need to get real. Charlton had 40k to our 34k and were louder than us.

Not sure at all why he took it down that road but he did.

This. Not sure how anyone can defend where he took his comments. They were unnecessary.

For Sunderland’s “PR” man, he doesn’t half score some own goals.

Wasn't it an interview straight after the game?

I'm sure the interviewer mentioned the size, however I'm not listening to it again!

He mentioned the size of our club and we shouldn’t be in League One. Quite rightly too. Methven decided to use that to take it down the route of comparing our ticket sales and noise on the day to that of Charlton’s.

These little details matter. You’re the second poster to attribute something to the interviewer that wasn’t said!

Aye, before that just bought game to game, please dont think it means I didnt go, just the first time bought a season ticket.

Game to game as in every week or just now and then?

Fwiw I don't mind people who don't go to games. Just ones who think they are better fans (spend all their time calling other fans names) and don't go to games.

He’s absolutely spot on about the noise like, they made more noise all game, even when we were 1-0 up.

Them selling more tickets than us is a shit stick to beat us with though. It’s a 30/40 journey costing about £10 for them. It’s a 3 hour train or 4.5 hour drive for us costing about £100. Plus hotel if you don’t fancy being absolutely fucked and doing it in one day.

So what did Charlie actually say? I fail to believe he questioned the support I think he'a a bit more intelligent than that.

A lot of posters are overly sensitive after Sunday tbh mate. The interview wasn’t great, but he tried to make the point that there was a lot of negativity leading up to the final and perhaps both players and fans didn’t believe they could win.

If you say so but either way everything he said was completely spot on

Aye. But absolutely nothing was said about the size of Charlton or ya having an entitlement to go up about them. Methven took it in that direction . Also worth remembering that Methven said that we are ‘the biggest club ever to have played in this division’. He said that very clearly and openly in his first podcast with RR. Now he’s moving goalposts because it doesn’t quite suit

Just had a listen and as far as I'm concerned the insinuation from the 'reporter' is that we are a big club so deserved to go up and Methven says Charlton are a big club too.
He's taking the interview away from their failure to deliver on what they told us was the priority this season ; to get back up at the first attempt.
Fair play to the interviewer for putting him on the spot ..the questioning of the Manager and now the owners has revealed the same old answers around expectancy and support.
Well I've supported for many a moon ..we are heading for another season in the third tier..at Wembley my expectancy was low ( hope high , expectancy less).Next season when there as usual my expectancy will again be limited.please don't use the fans as an excuse for failure ..it really dosnt wash anymore...we all know why the goals you set were not achieved.

Sounded like it. What’s your point? His question might have been “a club this big shouldn’t be at this level but given the turmoil this preseason are you happy we’ve at least stopped the rot?” We’ll never know cos Charlie started wittering on about us not selling out and being quiet. Again, he’s factually correct but had nowt to do with the interviewer. Couldn’t wait to have a pop

Any measure, crowds, history, recent history, trophies, profile. I honestly can’t think of a single measure anyone can use that would have charlton as a bigger club.
Crowds yes.
History is fast becoming ancient history now mind.
1 trophy since the war and even that was a giant killing act as oppose to a big club adding to their tally.
Is our profile that big?
I reckon Charlton will have had any many top half Prem league finishes as us in last 60 year.

I would say we would probably be classed as bigger but not significantly.

McGeady shouldn't have played at all based on his cameo. Didn't look anywhere near any sort of reasonable fitness, gave the ball away every time he touched it and stood watching the game winning cross go in.
But if he'd have started you then take him off if he's shite.
When you're unsure of fitness, to bring him on and then realise he's ineffectual is just f***ing stupid. I thought that was a really really poor decision by Jr.
Start him or don't play him.
And like you said, he didn't look anywhere near a reasonable level of fitness

So, despite you not knowing the context of what was said, Methven was absolutely spot on.

Champion. It’s canny this cult lark. I might gan along with it
Did they sell more tickets?
Were they louder?
Did they create more of an atmosphere?
Were safc poor?
I believe the answer is yes to all the above which means he is right with what he's said. I'm a season ticket holder and I was there and at no point in that interview was I offended in any way

Varied, had young kids and Mrs works Saturday so every game I can get to. Lot depends on in laws so can be hit and miss with Saturdays, midweeks easier. When I cant get to games I still watch them and pay for them on web.

Everybody else since they were formed. Our successes in the early years don’t count
Clubs like Blackpool, Bolton, Preston etc were big clubs once upon a time but aren’t anynore.
If our next 60 years mirror this last 60 are we still a big club despite it then being nearly 200 year since we were a real force!

Ha ha aye mate he'sbeen part of us for a year and he hates the fans and can't wait to stick the knife in!
