Charlie Methven on metro radio

Well if he is criticising the atmosphere, maybe he and the club can reflect on how they sold tickets. A lot of other clubs tried to create a singing section for their fans at Wembley. Our singers were dotted all over the place, rather than being together. If they were together it would have been much easier to get chants going, and would have fed through to other parts of the ground.

The distance from The Valley to Wembley is about the same as it is from The Stadium of Light to Ashington.

Imagine if Wembley was that close for you, man

And with world class transport links unlike the Sunderland to Ashington route

We’d be looking at 60k for a one off. The bloke hasn’t a clue man. Completely detached

No
Hes saying charlton are a pretty big club too, taking 40k to Wembley and they've been in the prem recently
No disrespect to Charlton but they aren't a big club. They are a great club and I like their fans but they aren't even the biggest club in League One! But more to the point, no one was saying anything about Charlton or their history/fans or if they deserved to go up.

The interviewer said Sunderland are too big of a club to be in League One, which is right. It was Methven who brought up the whole Charlton thing.

Maybe it needs a fresh set of eyes to see and call things how they are? Lets be honest, failing to question our sometimes awful atmospheres and blowing smoke up the fans arses for two decades hasnt helped has it? He is accepting the criticism of himself and the management but if you are going to assess all the issues with the season then have the courage to assess all the issues rather than ignoring one just because it might be a bit uncomfortable.

Do you include yourself in your criticism or are you on a one-man mission to roar us into 2 goal leads?

Clip on twitter has him saying we should be aiming for 100 points next year.
So we should! We got 105 points after losing to Charlton in '98 so we have every right to set the bar high next season. You have to have ambition of you might as well give up. An extra 15 points is simply a case of converting some draws into wins and a good summer's recruitment could make the difference.

The problem we have is that most clubs we play at this level do see us as their cup final (I know, shit cliche), but check the stats - many clubs were below par in their next game after playing Sunderland suggesting they put everything into playing us and have nothing left for their next game. That is what we are up against but I have no qualms with Charlie Methven or anyone else setting 100 points as a target. Yes, it is unlikely - but it can be done.

I'm as open to legitimate critisicm of SAFC as anyone, but the one thing that no one can legitimately criticise us for is our support.

Relatively, no other set of fans put as much in whilst getting as little out as we do. 46,000 fans at a League One game in December FFS.

It might be difficult for him to comprehend, but a lot of our fans are struggling to make enough money to put bread on the table each week and can't afford a trip to Wembley, as much as they'd kill to go. I know many who wanted to go but making sure their kids had enough to eat for the week was (shockingly) their priority instead.

I think he and Donald have done some very good work thus far but criticising our fans is the quickest way to get a one-way ticket out of the club, and rightly so.

I can’t disagree with that because that’s what your mates think?

Not sure about that

We lack quality going forward, that’s the reality, the squad is average and one paced
Of course you cant disagree with why I felt flat because that is what i felt.

Do you disagree that he played 3 holding CM's to get a 0-0 at Pompey?

I think we’re capable of seeing the issues ourselves but whether we’re capable of sorting them I don’t think we are.

There’s been countless threads criticising attendance and atmosphere already. It’s only been when it’s an outsider (especially one wearing pink trousers and a blue rosette) who’s having a pop that people are reacting.

I’d like to see something done about the atmosphere but I don’t know how you make everyone happy. For me there are three groups. One who want to make improvements (song books, standing, drums, pyro etc), one who think it’s the fans are fine and it’s the players not performing which is the issue and one who think the old way is best and everything should be spontaneous and original despite that clearly not being the case. Each of these groups keeps slagging off the other and no progress can be made. CM throwing a wasps nest in the middle of the three won’t help matters.

He's right on one thing doing that - set a target of 100, and you're more likely to get 90 than setting 90 as the target in the first place.

The wembley attendances bit i didnt agree with but the rest he is correct. Fact is we are a poor city with one of the furthest trips to wembley, having only just been there 2month ago. Charlton had a short journey, are in a more affluent part of the country and hadnt just been to wembley
Prefer Gary Rowells take on it all..." Fans are not 12th man , they are permanent starters" adding an average crowd of 32ooo is amazing including one of 46000 after back to back relegations. We have apparently had more fans at our two Wembley games than Man city had at their two.
Anyone who has any sort of pop at those fans who went to Wembley has a lack of understanding of the clubs recent and not so recent suffering.Gary Rowell, a local lad gets it and Charlie could do worse than having a coffee with him to understand a bit more .Charltons attendances over the season would indicate they are not as big a club fans wise as us..annoying interview if I'm honest.
