Charlie Methven on metro radio

Are you not a full shilling? Charlie accepted responsibility for both those running the club and the management. He was already critical of himself and said they needed to dust themselves out and work out how to make sure we improve next season.....Many fans need to do the same thing, or you can stick your head in the sand and just pretend its not an issue despite every regime for years and years either explicitly stating or implying its a problem.

When every manager says "this is a demanding crowd to play infront of and some players struggle to handle that" this is not a positive thing.....Why the hell are our fans making it a difficult place to play for our players????? Why not get behind the team no matter what for 90 mins and see what happens rather than do what we constantly do and create an environment where players are scared to death of making a mistake.

This goes both ways I think. The players make it a hard thing to come and watch too.
Until both the fans AND the players are on the same wavelength, nothing will change.

I've got to say I used to moan a bit in the premier league days after years of seeing overpaid mercenaries. This season in particular I didn't get on the players backs and all fans near me did the same. You can't blame the support for the team not being good enough. We clearly didn't get the balance right with the squad and are crying out for players with pace so we can get a 2nd goal in games rather than sit back to inevitably concede

I agree with your assessment but how does getting on the players backs help that? We cant sign anymore so why undermine the ones we have when we need them to be the best they can be?

He’s entitled to his opinion the same as the rest of us. And his response Ill judged though some may see it is a lot more measured than some of the crap that’s been posted on here since Sunday.

He can only say it as he see's it Dilli, the difference between him and us, is he is a PR professional, so is always aware of the attention his proclamation will garner. Yes, I think proclamation is better than reply or remark!

Have to think, what is the baseline his comments are trying to achieve. He knows the fan base and how interpretation of both the written and spoken word can be taken both in and out of context.

The team have enjoyed massive support home and away, International and UK members joined as well to give support to the club. Supporters have been class this season, when they are given something to shout about they do.

Now, need the team to come out firing consistently in new season and winning. More wins than draws required, good play, attacking football, get the support vocal.

Excuse the pun, the ball is in your possession Charlie, what you gonna do, shoot, pass or give away possession? Your time starts now!

Tell that to Charlie. Charlton brought 40k to our 35 so they’re the better club. He’s absolutely obsessed with attendances.

I actually agree with some of your comments about the atmosphere the fans create but he’s way off the mark complaining about how many we took to Wembley
And how many of them had already travelled thousands of miles this season following their team? We'd done over 1000 miles in two Wembley games for a start.

Really? Centre backs came in for abuse, Wyke was getting shit loads of stick for much of the season including being laughed at by his own fans. Honeyman gets stick all the time, gooch has had people getting on his back.

Do whatever you want after the game but ffs when every misplaced pass it met with a massive groan and people shouting shit at the players then as fans we are creating tension and stopping players from taking chances for fear of making mistakes......Every man and his dog, every sports psychologist etc will tell you its true but our lot just cant help themselves.

Ah haway ! The way you were talking was that we were making the team play shit because of abuse !!
It was the fans who actually got behind wyke and made him hit a bit of form albeit for a short period
I think you need to take a look at the manager and methven rather than the fans

No mate, you are, you are proving the point. When a club is struggling, everybody in that club needs to take a long hard look at themselves and wonder why.

As fans we like to tell the owners, management and players to do this but fuck me lets never do any self reflection and wonder if we could have been better as fans.

Some people do, the guys who organised the flags realise there is a problem and want to improve it, others suggest ways of improving it while many just continue to stick their heads in the sand and blame everyone else.
Methven is deflecting the issue from the real culprits.

Charlton got promoted because over the season they were the better team and the better team on the day. They have a better manager, better players and recruited better. Charlton are a basket case off the pitch. What Bowyer has managed to is remarkable.

Fair play to their fans. They had some tough times. They turned up in their numbers and sang their hearts out. But that isn't the reason they went up. The Charlton fans know it, we know it and Methven knows it. Charlton bettered us in every department this season despite having a shit load of problems. We didn't go up because the manager Donald and Methven picked wasn't good enough and tactically naïve. The scouts and recruitment team the picked were awful. The players we signed were expensive flops. But he won't blame himself, it's the fans fault!

Always the attendances with this lad. Probably thinks the Mags should be Champions League because they get decent crowds. As that contention makes clear: its f***ing nonsense. Attendances mean fuck all, quality on the pitch does - which is why not a single player in the world would choose the mags over Chelsea, or us over Brentford.
Attendances mean money to Charlie though, that's all he's interested in

Maybe. I haven’t got much to compare to. I know players and managers of other teams have commented on it up here but given what we’ve endured it’s hardly surprising. Was just commenting because it’s not true to say we don’t abuse them at all.

And that happens at every single club. Rightly or wrong, people let off steam at football up and down the country.

Fact is, our crowds haven’t turned on the players en masse at all this season and they’ve been backed in almost record numbers for this division

Begging for money
There is a difference. Is he moaning because we didn't sell out for Wembley for the 2nd time ??
He has got a f***ing cheek
No
Hes saying charlton are a pretty big club too, taking 40k to Wembley and they've been in the prem recently

Can’t believe there’s ANY Sunderland fan defending this.

Did he REALLY need to questions the fans attendance. We’ve smashed the L1 record this season for average attendances. We’ve sold out all our away trips. Over 75k in attendance in two Wembley trips in the matter of weeks. All this from an area reeling under tory austerity.

“Sunderland fans need to get realistic on that... and they had 40000 fans there to our 34000 fans today so on sheer size of club it’s hard to say that Charlton were the ones who had to stay down”

He’s in the studio with SD and RR and he hasn’t been on pure football since 12:56, I think it’s to much of coincidence myself and he try’s to defend things too much!

The only niggle to that theory is that the spelling is truly appalling whereas on the Oxford forum it was impeccable.

The ones defending it are the ones taken in by the “Oh he drinks in the Colliery Tavern. He’s so man of the people!” schtick.

The interviewer said that a club of "our" size can't be in league one and he butted in to say that "Sunderland fans" need to get realistic about that because Charlton have spent lots of time in the Premier League and had 40k to our 34k. Completely ignoring the fact that its a 600mile round trip for us for the second time in 2 months and their first in 21 years for what a 50 mile round trip? Let his mask slip here if you ask me.
So you think we Charlton should be a league one club then?

I agree. So as fans we need to respond to the fact that these players have never failed to put in 100% even when they have struggled. Unlike previous teams they have all put in a shift every single game. At times they have come up short and at times they are not great but the majority are league 1 players and there is a reason for that. Why not trying getting behind them every single game and get the best out of them we can, I just dont understand why fans of a club do things to undermine the confidence of their own players, its mental behaviour.

Man City sold less than 60k tickets across the fa cup semi final and final. We sold 15k more for a league one play off final and a tin pot cup. But that’s not good enough for Charlie
