That’s a hypothesis you’ve no way of proving. But the reason he’s at Chelsea, a top English club, is because he is a very talented player.

The ‘he wouldn’t be playing if...’ argument is lazy, tired and not actually representative of Southgate’s time in charge of England.

It was that mentality that landed us with Jack Rodwell.

Wouldn't be playing if he didn't play (or not play) for Chelsea.

if he's been picked based on the fact that he plays for Chelsea (or a top club) then why has Foden not been called up?

I think I'm going to trust Southgate on this one.

Clear pathways (regardless of club football). Clear development plans.

Our fans were clamouring for Ryan Noble to play not so long ago as well as many other youngsters who turned out to be shithouses.

How do you knoe hr is motivated, hungry, enthusiastic, carefree and not bogged down by years of their nation picking ‘experience’?

I'm not advocating picking the same players as years gone by, I'm saying the players who deserve to get picked should. He has never started a game, therefore how can he be in the squad on merit?
Its not about is he good enough or he hasnt made a premier league appearance its about southgate deciding he is good enough to start.
He is the manager let him decide if he gets it wrong he lives with the criticism

He can't call everyone up who never plays. Similar to Sven picking Theo Walcott when he was 16 or 17, total nonsense.

Hypothetical situation but if he was keeping one of our players out of the England squad he deserved to be in it, we would all be going mental.

Sven promoted Walcott from nowhere to first team. There was no pathway.

Southgate has seen Hudson-Odoi play at under 17, under 18 and under 19 level including a World Cup victory at U17 level.

there is no comparison.

How can you judge he is good enough if he hasn't ever played?
Over the weekend Southgate said Jack Grealish won't be picked while he's only playing in the Championship. Think he's playing a higher standard week in week out than Hudson-Odoi.

Foden gets game time for Man City, would Rice?

Barely played at all this season in the league.

Not that I like Grealish but he is playing at a higher standard, Hudson-Odoi will be playing for the U23's which is lower than league one standard.

The jump in standard from youth level is massive and therefore not comparable.

barely.

he'll be in the England squad before long though.

we need to get away from this mentality that the England squad should be picked on whoever is playing well for their clubs. We've got numerous youth teams winning World Cups etc. These boys are clearly talented. We shouldn't need them to displace David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Eden Hazard in order to get a look in for England.

Although Southgate says he won't pick grealish because he doesn't play Premier leauge football
