Iconic SAFC Photos

I always believed that the photo was taken at the last Home game of the season against Charlton when the Lad's victory confirmed promotion to the First Division. (I am sure that the more knowledgeable posters like yourself will however correct me if I am wrong).

I copied the photo from the souvenir magazine the Club produced that contained photos of the victory parade around Roker Park after the game. This was the occasion when Charlie said that he had been taken aback to see great big coal miners and shipyard workers crying with joy.

The magazine also contained profiles of all the players and at the time and I got Monty and Johnny Crossan to autograph theirs. I regret not getting more players to sign especially the wonderful Nicky Sharkey who was my particular favorite. Nicky clocked up 20 goals that season to Johnny's 27. Nicky you will remember sadly passed away a couple of years back.
The Charlton game was the penultimate game of the 63 - 64 promotion season. I took my wife, it was a day or so either side of her birthday. I can vouch that ordinary boots were worn, it was around 20th April. Plenty of photographic evidence of that match.

Aye as we were in Division 2 at the time of course. The badge is #433 and the team was #432 according to what I've seen on the internet.

Nice one.

I thought they'd phased out the lower divisions by then.
As a kid I used to like getting the Scottish players as there were two half-sized stickers on them.

My recollection of those matches are not as precise as yours but in my defence I would have to say that I was only 12 years old at the time and as a kid such exciting events do tend to become merged in the memory as one gets older. Some of the Lad's in the victory parade at the end of the Charlton game were in stocking feet so I may have connected Charlies' famous baseball boot exploit with that.

However I take my cap off to you and the infallible accuracy of you memory. I must admit I have trouble remembering my wife's birthday these days let alone what I was doing on it 55 years ago . Not of course that I was married to her when I was 12 - but you know what I mean.

I envy your friendship with Nicky Sharky I always heard that he was a great lad to know.

Do you know where I can buy a print of these MBH?

he's a good mate of mine chris, most of his original work is on display, and for sale, at the fans museum. loads of prints of the painting too. some of the paintings are incredible to see in person. he does stacks of non-safc stuff (i have a painting of his on my wall at home) but i think its only safc stuff at the fans museum. i think its only open on a matchday but i'm not sure. he's doing loads of new ones recently.
