Cabaye was available for c£5m back then, to find the same standard of player now would cost 5 times that. To judge Benitez on gross spend (because speaking about Net Spend on here is forbidden, of course) you'd have to account for normal inflation, plus the inflation that has occurred within the football transfer system itself. And how would you quantify the latter? Now, if you've the time to tot up the gross value of Graham Carr's hits and misses, adjust for normal inflation, then adjust for transfer system inflation, you crack on.Of course I am so go ahead and answer.

fwiw, Benitez has signed some flops (Sels, Murphy, e.g.), but he's also signed some bargains (Fernandez, Dubravka, Schar). But his hit/miss rate isn't drastically one way or another, like it isn't for most managers. Also Graham Carr put forward some absolute stinkers as well.
What this boils down to is bias. Benitez is the current manager of Newcastle United and has the support of the fans, therefore you must find ways to criticise him, otherwise you're not a showing your support for Sunderland... or something equally ridiculous and childish.
Always been a strange thing on here. Rafa has had most of top jobs in football. Jack Ross will never have any of them. Nor has any Sunderland manager in living memory. Yet we are the daft ones for appreciating otherwise.
Boils down to bias alright, hes your manager so he can do no wrong![]()

Yer talking shite as usual.
It is not as if a manager left us to take the England job either mate. Well, not in Ben's living memory. You’re right. It’s not as if Advocaat won UEFA cups or anything.
And just because he did win those cups years ago doesn’t make him a good manager now.
But keep trying to make some sort of point. You’ll get there eventually.
Lower finishes than Pardew.
Better manager because he won stuff a decade ago. Obvs.![]()

Allardyce/Wilkinson England managers.Always been a strange thing on here. Rafa has had most of top jobs in football. Jack Ross will never have any of them. Nor has any Sunderland manager in living memory. Yet we are the daft ones for appreciating otherwise.
Allardyce/Wilkinson England managers.
McColl Scotland manager
Coleman Welsh manager.
O'Neal/Keane, Irish management.
Top jobs, unless managing a country is not a top job of course.
He loves it ! Makes him feel relevant and plays to the cult that he'll never leave themBenitez refuses to deny the link to Leicester in his press conference
I’m not making out his strike rate is that good.
Your lot are giving him a the credit for assembling a ‘superior’ side to the one Rafa has despite the outlay not being too dissimilar.
That would indicate it is ‘you’ who seems to be insinuating he has a better eye for a player than Benitez.
Who said he can do no wrong? Was it the Mag at work™?Boils down to bias alright, hes your manager so he can do no wrong![]()
Sorry, I thought a reasonable answer delivered at a time that was convenient for me was permissible. I see that, instead, I should reply immediately...91 hours, 91 f***ing hours and that's the best you can come up with.![]()
Are they the same standard as Yohan Cabaye was? No, no they weren't. And we've all seen worse players go for ludicrous sums (James Maddison cost £25m didn't he?) so don't you try and come it.So fee's are 5x as much theses days.
Does this mean it would have cost £50m for a Pappis Cisse today.
or
£26.5m for Davide f***ing santon.
or
£33.5 for Mapou Yanga Mbia etc, etc.....
Yer talking shite as usual.
I'm saying he's benefited from a undervalued market and the freedom to suggest players regardless of what the requirements were on the pitch. Forget the fact we desperately needed centre backs and fullbacks when there are attacking midfielders who'll maybe provide a bigger return on investment.
Benitez had to overhaul a squad for the championship to guarantee immediate promotion, then try and add Premier League quality players on a modest budget.

I dislike the fat **** loadsI don't think any of us dislike Benitez what we find funny is your cult like views, hes had that much smoke blown up his arse must sit at home laughing his cock off and collecting his money.
Wheres the money gone??? Bentiez's pocket is your answer.
Love him for what he done at other clubs ages ago ?Thing is everybody seems to be happy with Rafa at Newcastle. We love him & Sunderland fans keep saying they want him to keep managing us.
