New Music Releases Thread

Just gone back and put that right - sorry for the oversight @James this is the best most sanest thread on here by an enormous distance

I do need to get some new stuff on my docket - feel like there's too much "what I was listening to 30 years ago" on my current gig list:
Peter Murphy (40 years of Bauhaus)
Bob Mould
Teenage Fanclub
Slothrust
White Lies
Twilight Sad
Frank Turner (4 nights)
Billy Bragg (3 nights)

I saw White Lies last night at the boiler shop in Newcastle and it was class tbf. Love their new album as well

So, some interesting releases this week: Ariana Grande, Beast in Black, Bob Mould, Cass McCombs, HEALTH, Jessica Pratt, Josef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch, LCD Soundsystem (a live album), Mercury Rev, Panda Bear, Said the Whale, Xiu Xiu, Yak, The Lemonheads, Lau, Hauschka and Michael Chapman.

Probably 6 or 7 there I'm interested in. Mostly obvious choices but Lau, Hauschka and Michael Chapman might not be so threadish. The Mercury Rev album is their recording of Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete. No idea what the Van WIssem and Jarmusch album is going to be like.

Got Mould and Lemonheads on preorder, so looking forward to those - what else should I check out?

Any of you North East types going to see the Lemonheads at Wylam Brewery on Monday? Curious to see what kind of show they’re playing. Tickets are going on sale for Brooklyn tomorrow and I was likely going to go for it, but I’ve not seen Dando play as a band in years, probably London mid90s (seen him several times since, but always solo), so was curious what kind of show this is – is it actually “a band” or just him using the name, back catalogue or the covers on the new album etc

Oh great, thanks! Maybe they'll be a bit more rehearsed and together by May...or maybe they won't. He's such a frustratingly talented fuck-up waste

I guess its frustrating for him that people really only want to hear the songs from the 90s and don't have any interest in the newer stuff (not that there is much) but if you're gonna go on tour at least do a bit of rehearsal and even try and pretend to look like you want to be there ( this is coming from someone who's seen the pixies a million times so I know what disinterested looks like)

If hes in the mood for it though he'll be class, saw him with Juliana Hatfield a few years back and that was a great gig.

Depends what kind of folk - I have a lot of folk in my locker but that's a broad genre! As for strangeness...

So, Panda Bear is one of Animal Collective, hence likely strangeness and Hauschka is neo-classical.

On the folk side of things - Jessica Pratt is a singer songwriter, guitar, piano, whispery vocals. Michael Chapman is an old school folkie, now well into his 70s, has recorded with Steve Gunn fairly recently. Lau are Scottish and make, I guess, electronic folk. Kris Drever (who's recorded with Roddy Woomble, I think) is their singer.

Thanks, I'll give Pratt and Lau a go. "Whispery" worries me a little :D as I can lose interest if it gets too airy-fairy - I like my folk to have a little more hook and/or umph. I remember the Drever/Woomble album from a couple of years back, but mainly for Roddy's vocals

Moving away from tomorrow's releases. The KIKOK album, which came out a couple of weeks ago is absolutely sublime. Solo electronic problem from one of Gnoomes.

I’m going to India with work for 5 days on Sunday so I’ll have plenty of time to listen to stuff. Any recommendations?

LCD Soundsystem and Lemonheads are 2 of my all time favourite bands so I’ll be listening to them but beyond them and Cass McCombes I’m clueless and will probably end up listening to Better Oblivion Community Center on repeat again!
