It could be possible that he wanted to stay and the offer was good one from the board. But he got an offer to move to a team in the top 2 divisions who are offering more money that we can't match. We won't the facts until the summer. I think people on here want to blame the owners for this mess. But the damage was done last season. We knew clubs had their eye on Asoro and Maja and we let their contracts dwiddle down instead of offering contracts to the young players coming through.
I’d agree the damage was done last season.

Why??????

Instead of handing out insults can you explain how spending 2 million is an “embarrassment”
depends what you spend it on..spending it on astriker with one goal in his whole career would be stupid..
spending it on a striker proven at this level this month would be very good..

We didn’t get £2 million for him this year. That’s not how transfers work. He’s on a 4 year deal at Swansea so we’d have likely got £500k tops as the fees are spread over the lifetime of the contract.

Tbf that depends on the deal arranged, it isn't always spread evenly.

They’re certainly amortised over the length of the contract but I’d be surprised if they’d want the additional admin that goes with it. I see your point though.

Either way though suggesting that because we got a £2 million fee for a player that that somehow cancels out a loss of up to £10 million (although that may have changed now) which would have factored in the income from that sale anyway is ridiculous.

Then again, the exact same could happen with this new regime.

They’ve known the likes of Maja, Gooch, Stryjek, Embleton and Hume were out of contract in the summer since the day they walked in, and so far they’ve only sorted one.

Maybe they have to revisit what they see as ‘fair’ offers.

Should have been more pro-active about the whole situation. Should also have never played it out so publicly imo.

Fair comment, however I am talking about the point of contracting last time around. The contracts should have been built with more protection for SAFC, I am pretty sure they will be going forward.

Tend to agree about playing it out publicly, for me that's not helped the player or the club one bit.

Surely that's how a club depreciates the value of a purchased striker and has nothing to do with a payments structure. It's the same as a business buying a machine and writing it off over 4 years but paying for it all up front or on a 3 yr HP agreement

Why wasn't his contract sorted out by the previous regime?

The youngsters were the only bright spark last season and yet Maja, Gooch, Hume, Honeyman & Embleton etc have been allowed to enter the final year of their contracts despite showing some promise.

Luckily it looks like most will sign but we're set to lose our most important player for a pittance in the Summer.

It's another scenario where lack of foresight has affected us here, even more of a shame because Maja is the most talented of our young crop and he's the one wanting to move on.

I'm glad he's at least staying till the end of the season and I'm confident his attitude won't turn bad.
SD addresses the questions regarding the contracts for young players breaking into 1st team in his last Roker Report podcast and has put provisions in place to avoid this in the future...something along the lines of having automatic extensions put into contracts for young players making so many appearances for the first team.

they certainly amortise it that way yes, but also pay in installments is very common..

When we bought giaccherini we paid £7.5 million for him and paid it over 3 equal instalments over the lifetime of the contract. The payments would still be due even if he’d moved on.

Staying

JOSH MAJA is set to remain with Sunderland until the end of the season – before completing a summer move to Germany.

Maja’s future has been the subject of sustained speculation recently, with the 20-year-old, who is due to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign, having turned down the offer of a new contract at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have looked into the possibility of selling the striker this month in order to maximise his financial value, but Jack Ross has indicated a desire to keep him until the end of the season if possible and that now looks the likeliest scenario.

That was 9 hours ago.

Echo reporting Crystal Palace are now interested.
