SMB Tennis thread

Just had a quick check, she's 23 next month and has beaten 5 lower ranked / unranked young Brits since mid October. There's also another one who is just 17  - perhaps that's the one you were thinking of, I wasn't aware of that. Imagine 3 with the same name

Must be a common Russian name.

Aye, must be. What's your general Aussie Open plan? See bits and bobs where you can live, some late nights, get up earlier than normal etc?
I'll watch it through the night tonight as it's the first day and just feel like shit at work. After that it will be highlights until the weekend I think. It's difficult to plan to watch specific matches unless the player is first on.

What about you?

Tonight I'll be watching Sharapova-Dart until a conclusion and if Boulter and Watson are still going after that, I'll watch them - those 3 all start at midnight. I'll then follow any other matches that I'm interested in which started at 12 (Sabalenka etc.) if they are close to finishing, so therefore unlikely to be many men's games - I'd say 2.30/3 will be my limit. I'll likely find out some of the results at work, particularly Murray, but hopefully I'll avoid the more random players I'm interested in and watch them on the Player when back home.

I'm then off from Tuesday to the following Tuesday, so not sure whether to watch live through the night and feel like shite the next day or go to bed at normal time and watch on record the next day - I'll play that by ear.

What happened to Ostapenko? Her odds have been really big for every match this year so far. One hit wonder?

I'm still on board. She ended last season playing with a wrist injury, got double bagelled in one match and then pulled out of the Zhuhai, 2nd tier year end finals. Not sure if she got it sorted - her result against Niculescu the other week would suggest not.

But yeah, saw she was the underdog against Sakkari and she's on a hell of a bad run. I do hope she can get herself back into the top 10, but can't see it being any time soon.

Stay up late get up early and bet bet bet:D

Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to put my acca on soon. Might even get a couple of hours kip in around 10.

Aye fell asleep during Everton game how much do you usually stake on your acca's and you have much luck in having a shocker at the moment

Just a few quid each day mate, like 4/5/6 on, hopefully returning £35/40 or something. I've got about £15 worth of free bets and I can split them how I like, so that'll come in handy.

I won a BTTS acca yesterday so that helps as well.

I used to get loads don't get any of will hill these days

Was just thinking about this. In recent tournaments it's been like 4 or 5 (sometimes less), but just saw a tweet before from British Tennis that 8 is the most at the Australian Open since 1988. I'm hopeful of at least 2 going through:

  • Murray - not much chance unfortunately given recent circumstances
  • Edmund - one of the worst draws he could have had, he's actually the underdog despite his high seeding
  • Norrie - prob 50/50, beat Fritz last week but the American is higher ranked
  • Evans - favourable 1st round draw, most chance of progressing out of any of them IMO, but probably Federer next, so unlikely to have an extended run
  • Konta - prob 50/50 - lost to her opponent a couple of weeks ago, similar current ranking, opponent will have extra crowd support
  • Boulter - not beyond her, Makarova hasn't been active, hasn't played this year and no wins since August
  • Watson - unlikely
  • Dart - unlikely, but not beyond her as it's not going to be a peak Sharapova

I'll predict Evans, Boulter and one other (from Norrie, Edmund, Konta)

It would be great to get 3 or 4 through. It's a shame that they are not spread out a bit more over the first 2 days.

All things considered, mine is:
  • Wimbledon - the one you grew up with. Great having one of the most famous tournaments in the world in your home country and the spotlight on the UK, pretty much taking over the BBC platform.
  • US Open - best viewing time by far. Majority of it runs from 4pm-midnight so you can see most of it in the evening and not take up hols if you want to watch lots
  • Australian Open - not great timings, but it does make it interesting to an extent with either late nights or early evenings, but pretty much impossible not to miss a lot. It's Also nice to have something to look forward to in Jan and also first slam for a few months
  • French Open - Personally least prefer clay of the 3 surfaces. But like the AO it's the first slam for a long time (although Wimbledon is just around the corner). Decent enough timings.

1: French
2: US
3: Aus
4: Wimbledon

I love clay court tennis and I really don't like big servers. The Aus Open is exciting as it comes early in the year. I like the rowdiness of the US Open and the noise.

Wimbledon is far too strict and traditional for my liking but that's what makes it different and appreciate other people will love it for that reason.

Some very good players at very long odds outright

If I had my way I certainly wouldn't want to get rid of the clay season as it's definitely nice to have a change of scenery and it's obviously traditional in Europe, but I do generally prefer watching the other 2 surfaces. I'd love the grass season to be extended by another week, but that's for another day.
