we already pay more than 5k to lots of footballers..there are rules about what we can pay that all the league has to abide by but the rules are lighter for an academy player..

Yeah but what is being said is that Donald said on the podcast about having a workable wage for the league & that workable wage was 5kpw for top league 1 players. He's strongly pushed this in radio interviews & podcasts.

You're seen to be arguing that we have offered 18k pw. Any substance behind it or just opinion/conjecture?

well yes they inheirted..but they could have got rid of some more of the 5k easenes if they had really wanted to...otr sold other players to balance it..honeyman might be on more than 5k i dont know, but they could have sold him if they wanted to..mcgeady would probably have found a buyer..but they said nthy =ey didnt want to lose players who wanted to be there..and so far they have not..

he ,mihhght have got an offer this week thayt he didnt haeve last week. if he knew he had a v good offer last week i suspect he would have said then..

Could say that about every week this season though tbf. People get in players ears all the time. A deadline doesn’t change the way a player would act. I’m not even sure what the point of a deadline is tbh unless we want him gone.

i didnt say the 18k number marra and am not saying its true, it would surpise me like, but i dont think 5k is the number,,he said 3-5 is the average wage in the league. and thats a guide for us..not that we wont nescessarily go higher..

Do you? That's a weird contract, then... 'you've signed a new contract that doesn't apply until the old one expires, but, here's a pile of cash to make up the difference' seems strange, especially as the lump sum will mean the term of the lump sum will straddle tax years. Are you sure that this is the case? I get that there can be a one-off 'signing' bonus, but, why would you do this in lieu of wages? I am more than willing to accept that I could be wrong and that we do have a process of new contracts not superceding existing ones, but, if we do, that's mental (but not as mental as some of the things that have gone on, allegedly).

When we gave Wickham an increased deal he didn’t get it until the end of the season and we sold him pretty much immediately after it kicked in.

He did also slaughter the old regime for promising 12k to Nolan/Naylor. Said they didn't understand the league offering money like that and it just wasn't viable

because those guys are less good than maja or hae less sell on potential?

think the deadline is so we can sign a replacement unfortuantely..

SD said in previous podcasts that league 1 players earn +-1500/w ...and our maximum would be 5 grand that we would offer any new players.

He isn’t a new player though and whilst he’s currently a league 1 player by definition he’s not like one of these that signs a two year contract then moves to another league 1 side when it runs out then repeats. He’s 19 and playing at a level below where he should be because he’s at a club that’s nose dived since he signed and is currently probably our most important player.

That’s the worry like. I’ll be very disappointed if that is the case.

Not very ambitious. We'll sign some league one plodder that we'll struggle to get rid of if we go up in the play offs

keepers develop much later...but pickford was eother preston in the championship or bradford in league one..he almosyt certainlhy played more games in the championship by the age maja is now than maja has..henderson was bottom half championship? that happens to be the highest level maja has ever played at..and henderson sttod out at coventry..maja didnt stand out in te championship..though our team was so shite it would have been hard fpr him tpo...

Tbf Maja had Defoe in the prem as competiton then Grabban in the Championship. We didn’t really have time to loan Maja out like Henderson and Pickford as we had just signed him and he impressed in pre season so much Moyes wanted to keep him then when we were relegated Short stopped spending so we didn’t have the luxury of being able to send him out on loan.

The deadline could also be that they offered a very good deal and are getting zero feedback from Maja and his agent...SAFC doesn’t start and stop from a 19yr old striker.

That's my view - if we lose Maja it'll be a huge blow, no doubt, but the club is bigger than one player, however many goals he's scored.

At the end of the day, by the deadline they'll have been on for months negotiating this thing, if he doesn't want to sign a contract that's a shame but it can't just go on forever like this.

At some point he either commits or he doesn't, but at least everybody knows where they stand.

No but a deadline in reality means nothing in that case if they intend to keep him until end of the season. He might want to sign in April and hey aren’t going to turn around and say no because he missed the deadline.

I’m resigned to losing him now. I just hope it’s at the end of the season and not now but the deadline to me suggests them wanting him gone straight away so they can get someone else in now.

Indeed it doesn’t. But so far this season, Maja’s goals are probably the difference between us being right in the automatic promotion push and on the periphery of the play offs. I don’t see us signing a striker who gets us his goals, for a lower wage than we are offering and for a fee lower than what we will get for him. That’s the major difficulty we have this window.

It’s all well and good coming out with sound bites about the piss taking party being over but we also need to be pragmatic and sensible when it comes to protecting our best assets and looking after our best interests on the park. I’m not sure that setting this one week deadline necessarily does that.

This is the first major test for the owners. I’m 99% certain that 99% will come down on their side and blame the player if he does depart. If that worst case scenario occurs, then I only hope we aren’t looking back in a few years thinking we were mugged.

Exactly...to me, the deadline means SAFC are done negotiating and have offered their best deal. I could be 100% wrong but if Maja had any intention of staying and negotiating a contract, it would be done by now. I think Maja and his agent want to see out their options but possibly have been stringing the club along...the deadline was the clubs reaction. We’ll see in the end.

You can structure a deal anyway you want...the deadline to me says they’ve tried a lot of scenarios and are getting nothing back. If Maja wanted to stay and sign...I’m sure a deal would be done by now.

What if Maja just doesnt want to sign? What do you want the club to do???

Probably by someone who's read the same kind of story @Lord Alfred has quoted either on here on some other social media platform. Sounds implausible to me.

Was from someone who I know knows someone at the club although I don’t often get much info from him. He did tell me PDC was gone before anyone knew (his biggest claim to fame) and also told me some info pre season about the new kit and the sponsor, and something else (which I’m pm’d someone on here about at the time). He was right about the kit and sponsor but the other thing he said hasn’t happened, but was similar to changing the badge/stand names so may well have been talked about privately then but never acted on. He has also told me something else that is so mental I don’t think it can be true but will wait and see because if he’s right about that I’ll believe everything he ever tells me again

Or he just wants to wait and see what happens. A deadline wouldn’t change that. If he decides in May he wants a new contract we wouldn’t say no.

To me it sounds like ‘If you don’t sign by Friday we will sell you’ amid a report he’s been offered about for 1.5 million (I know Donald quashed it).

Firstly, I think they should have offered him better terms. As if what I heard is correct (an average league 1 salary) then I don’t think he was likely to sign.

Secondly, I don’t think they should have announced this deadline. That is purely posturing.
