Axed rail routes may be reopened under new Department for Transport plans

If Consett got a rail link I’d definitely consider a move there but as it is, it’s an hour on the bus to Newcastle for work which makes it a bit of a pain tbh.

thing is though, a rail link would'nt be much faster (if at all) than the peasant wagon is now

Well Sunderland to Newcastle is about 30 mins on the metro and that’s 12/13 miles. Consett to Newcastle is roughly the same distance.

in yee olden days (when there was a rail line with passenger services)

Newcastle - Consett (low route, so Swalwell, Rowlands Gill, Ebchester, Shotley, etc) - 56 mins

Newcastle - Consett (high route, so Low Fell, Birtley, Pelton, Beamish, Stanley, Annfield Plain, Leadgate) - 1hr 20mins

you might knock 10% off the time with modern signalling, platforms, trains, etc - but i doubt the actual speed of the train will be much faster than what was running back in the day

It'd be nice if any of them managed to be re-established; we all need to massively reduce our reliance on cars but when public transport is as gash as it is in the northeast, what choice have we? We haven't even got a bloody bus to Durham from mine, never mind trains.

That borders line is shit, should have been double lined the whole way down . One delay and the whole lot is fukked
Still a damn site better than the bus. Lots of things to improve on as well such as the quality, quantity and cleanliness of carriages, but a really good step in the right direction.

Needs to be a campaign for better rail links southerly out of Sunderland

The rail err I mean metro line between Sunderland and Newcastle is so restrictive

Sunderland's future is away from any biased connection to Tyne and Wear. It's historically Co Durham and partnerships and links need to be developed to the south

I suggest the next time you visit the North East and have a look,
A town that was absolutely destroyed when the steel works closed has over a number of years pulled itself up from it's bootstraps. New housing going up and being sold as the prices are quite reasonable
The town has turned into a sort of dormitory town for people working in Newcastle and Durham with poor public transport links.
Your comment is typical southern based claptrap about a north east town you know nowt about,

I’ve been to Consett unfortunately, it’s the closest thing to a time machine that mankind has.

Was'nt this part of the deal to get this north of tyne combined authority bollocks off the ground - to reopen the northumberland line

Th rest of us will be getting the square root of fuck all

We voted for Brexit mate and thereby stopped the EU regional development fund which actually put money into poorer areas like the North East of England without or own government having much say in it and all financial decisions will now be made in Westminster going forward, so yes, we will be getting the square root of fuck all like you say. The new bridge in Sunderland will be the last such development we see up here for a very long time and anyone thinking this government will put money into railways in the North East are ridiculously deluded.

What load of old arse juice. When stories like this crop up they are either trying to make the little people in the north feel like they care about them or they are trying to offset the news that billions are about to be spent on transport in the south.
Like I posted earlier, this is a story from last year, rehashed for this year. We should be wondering why.

Local election/general election/something else coming up.
It is amazing that grown adults fall for these attempts to manipulate them so easily.

A government will only be as bad as the opposition allow them to be.
