I would imaging clubs like Bournemouth etc wished they had built stadiums too big for them .It's my feeling when clubs lower down the ladder build new grounds Walsall .Scunthorpe etc they build stadia to hold about double their average crowd .This still limits them more or less ambition wise to stay more or less where they are.Not forgetting a larger S0L. Would be virtually 2 grounds the bowl and premier concourse

There was an official club mock up in a program in the early years of the sol, looked mint with brick work all around. Never happen like but at least we always have the option.

I'm not a massive fan of the 66k vision in fact I think it's stupid.

The last 40 years of history are a really good indicator of where we are as a club.

2 X 7th finishes in top league
Lots of either bottom end of top league or relegated.
Lots of 2nd tier football.
2 X 3rd tier football.
(Not many sell outs at 48,800 (with segregation)

So we are just as likely to be in 3rd league as we are to finish 7th in premier league, that's 7th, not actually top or anything, 7th.)
I firmly believe every club has a natural range and ours is currently 7th in premier to 1st in League 1. It's quite a wide range and is more consistent with the clubs that call themselves big clubs than the actual big clubs.

It's great that it's possible if the planets ever line up and we actually became good. But even then history suggests it's more likely that the good quickly became shite again in which case 30k of us would be sat in a 66k stadium.

It's a shit idea and should be forgotten about.
Last 60 years it's even worse record overall although your range would still hold true.....however, let's hope the planets align and we do a Leicester one season

And what if we'd built on that 7th place? What if we'd been the ones bought out? We'd murder gates of 48k with some success. Crowds have dwindled because we've been beyond shit for 12 years
That's what I'm saying, marra. We didn't and the game has totally spiralled out of control now. So if we had expanded to 66k then, we would be even more embarrassed by the size of our stadium, than we are now!

Well said. It is a ridiculous idea and will never happen.

The other option of course is to maximise the stands/seats for use as a venue for concerts etc! Costs against profit, increase the amount of decent concerts, would pull in the punters an excellent venue with good travel links. May be an option

they look at, also more chance of obtaining some brilliant advertising money into the club! Sure all these options are been looked at by the new owners as they will want to maximise everything and surely not just sustainable on football only.

Whatever increases the viability without costing too much could be a winner! Perhaps sponsors to add on Stands and they get to name them for a period of Time! Who knows, interesting times and opportunities upwards, which is better than

where we were heading under Short and his madcap minions, The Blew it Crew!"

I'm a massive fan of it, if we're in a position to do it it means we're doing well

The intent was to build out on the south stand first which have taken capacity to 55,ooo then the west stand which would have increased capacity to 63,000. Part of the logic was based around the SOL becoming a world cup venue, we'd have been guaranteed a quarter final
I always remember the score board on the artists impression Sunderland 3 A C Milan 0

Was the artist impression not for the Nissan stadium?

Spot on Rocky! We’re almost unique in that if we’re supplying the goods, we can satisfy ever increasing demand over and above our current capacity, at very little relative cost.
If it’s happening on the field, it’ll happen off it! I’ve said it before on here... we’re the envy of all but a very few clubs... even now, in our current position!

Well said. It is a ridiculous idea and will never happen.

We had to build the extension before we could build the swimming pool and the beacon of light. So thats probably the main reason we extended it in the first place
