If SAFC were consistently performing at the top level of the premier league for 5+ seasons, we'd easily achieve crowds of 55-60k regularly. We got a 48k average finishing 7th twice ffs.

Getting a pint and a pie would be a f***ing nightmare mind you

We've had a terrible time as fans over the last 10 years yet crowds have still been really impressive. Like the op said up the page give us a piece of what Man city fans have had over the last 10 years and the 66k ground would be full

That's easy said, but what about the real Sunderland fans who are then out-priced and the kids who can't afford to go......all of a sudden you have foreign fans at the match and Chinese people waving at the camera as it scans the crowd, that's if they are not filming the corner or throw-in taker with their iPad.....it would be great for the club, but the lads who are now travelling to Blackpool on New Years Day would have to settle for watching it at home or in the boozer because a £1500 season ticket is out of reach......

What a load of nonsense. 20,000 empty seats off 48,000 would still mean 14,000 empty seats. How's that a full stadium?
Don't know how you reckon it's 'Nonsense' like. At present we're pulling in, what, getting on 30k? If we get promoted to the championship and do we'll, we should hopefully get another 10k which would have us at 40kish. Opening up the Prem Concourse if required will up us to 48k as per the 7th place season. Certainly don't need any more than that unless someone called Mr Al Thani comes in and gives us a Man City team!

Not to be a pedant, but they were still building it during the first 7th place finish, so the average that season was only just above 41,000.

Only.

We had one of our worst averages in recent years (not including this season or last) when we did finish 10th. That's why Quinny started losing his blob.

That wasn't a real 10th though, aye I know it was but it could have been 15th had every result not gone our way on the final day.

I think it's a modern concept people assuming stadiums should be full at every match .When I first went to Roker the capacity was 63 thousand seldom much over 60% full .But on the special occasions like Everton in the cup with a full house the atmosphere was something else

And what if we'd built on that 7th place? What if we'd been the ones bought out? We'd murder gates of 48k with some success. Crowds have dwindled because we've been beyond shit for 12 years

We need Juan Hydro-Electric to open up big time in Sunderland first. Create the jobs then generate the income on the back of the extra punter wealth.

So are you saying Chinese people can't be "Real Fans"

highly unlikely, what were we averaging when we had those two 7th place finishes? can't imagine it was sell outs every game

We were selling the full 42000 often enough for Berb to think building the North Stand extension was the right thing to do

I couldn’t wait for match day, the place was rocking every week for 3 or 4 seasons.

Fantastic times with Reidy and his never say die heroes

Shame they turned to zeroes

That's interesting. Didn't know that. Assume he talking about stuff like the pool but why would we need to increase the capacity to do that? Where's the link?
Murray said that he put the north extension on because he was aware of the future plans to develop the land behind (Aquatic Centre etc). He said he had to build before they did or we'd never have gained planning permission for the north extension further down the line.

I'm not a massive fan of the 66k vision in fact I think it's stupid.

The last 40 years of history are a really good indicator of where we are as a club.

2 X 7th finishes in top league
Lots of either bottom end of top league or relegated.
Lots of 2nd tier football.
2 X 3rd tier football.
(Not many sell outs at 48,800 (with segregation)

So we are just as likely to be in 3rd league as we are to finish 7th in premier league, that's 7th, not actually top or anything, 7th.)
I firmly believe every club has a natural range and ours is currently 7th in premier to 1st in League 1. It's quite a wide range and is more consistent with the clubs that call themselves big clubs than the actual big clubs.

It's great that it's possible if the planets ever line up and we actually became good. But even then history suggests it's more likely that the good quickly became shite again in which case 30k of us would be sat in a 66k stadium.

It's a shit idea and should be forgotten about.

Fixed that for you.

We averaged over 46k twice. Other than that, we've only had a few seasons where we were averaging about 1-1.5k over the original 42k. All in all, I don't think the extension was worth it from that point of view - given the remaining 12 seasons where we have been below 42k (sometimes significantly below). Aside from the costs of building it, there's also ongoing costs. Plus the detrimental effect on the atmosphere in the stadium.

That being said, Bob mentioned the other day in the podcast that the extension was necessary in order to be able to proceed with further developments around the stadium.

I think its about at its optimum size now.
(Unless we win the Champions League 5 times in a row )
