What would happen (in reality) if war broke out today

The French blamed everyone but themselves, incl. communists and Jews, for the fact that they were rolled over so easily in a few weeks in WW2.

Most of them didn’t even fight at all, and were happy to collaborate with the Nazis by means of the Vichy govt.

Strangely when it was all over, pro Nazi French were about as rare as white Dogshit.

To be fair to them they did put on quite a show by bravely attacking the women who they thought had bedded Germans.

Is that the Nigel Farage potted history?

The French were the junior partner in the Entente Cordiale they more or less took orders from the British - during the Battle of France the French army particularly the tank divisions held their own and fought bravely, like ourselves the French appeased the Nazis and were not ready. I think you'll find that a lot of the British forces who made it to Dunkirk were more than grateful of the French rear-guard. It's worth also reading up on the French Maquis & the resistance and the heroic deeds before and during D-Day. Please bear in mind that thousands of Brits were unrepentant Nazis and locked up during WWII and even executed! The pre-war fascists in high places like the owners of the Daily Mail managed to get off with it.

100% this.
It’s not just the dead. First hand experience while I was there I was working hard for my team. When I got home the reality of it all sinks in. Now that I’ve been out a few years I’ve realized I lived a different life to everyone I now know and they will never understand what war is actually like beyond words. It’s not knocking them or claiming I’m better, it’s just scary to think my mind will never unsee what I’ve seen. What would it be like to think normal?

Spot on words m8. I fit into society with no issues but have little in common with the majority when you realise what we have seen and done. Not that we have done anything special just our job, but the experiences and memories can easily screw you up even today. It’s good to talk, just not with someone whose never been there and is more interested in who you’ve killed. I use family and friends if I need to talk, it works.

We had a similar conversation walking back from the remembrance parade on Sunday.
I wonder how many of the dead we were remembering on Sunday didn’t have a choice to be brave or not? Not just British forces but across the board.
My granda was called up, didn’t want to go like most of the poor buggers. My nana was pregnant with my dad and off he pops to Burma and never to return. A 30yr old bloke leaving behind his world. He wasn’t alone and my dad growing up with no dad, he wasn’t alone either.
The conversation with ower lass went along the lines of, we are now told in our lives to ask questions, why do we want to do that, what evidence do we have and we are now told to get justification on everything before we do stuff. This is something that my dad said to me that few did when he was growing up and if a “grown up”said for you to do it, you did.
My generation doesn’t follow those rules anymore and kids generation don’t either.

This is exactly my view and was just on about this on Sunday as well, these days we have access to all sorts of info from all different viewpoints to make our own decisions and not just be told to do something and blindly do it.

Yes and we fucked off and left them to it against the best trained and equipped army that had ever been raised. So tell me about WW1 and how they didn't put up much of a fight anyway or doesn't that fit your agenda.

Not strictly true - the French army was, on paper, at least as good as the Wermacht. The Germans were (of course - they're German) much better organised and prepared.

Not sure who the OP has in mind as enemy. If China siding with Russia then it will reduce the world's population dramatically and will destroy western civilisation as we know it. However China don't need to fight a war to control the world. The danger comes from the orange bell-end in charge in USA. They won't want to be knocked off their perch and he might well do something stupid.

Trump's just a gobshite, Putin's the real dodgepot.

On a more serious note - depending on the cause I would have no problem signing up to fight - but I'm too old. I wouldn't want my kids going to war though.
