the same occurs on dame dot. after the match from church street north, it is clearly signed left to seaburn, right to centre. this road A1018 in the joined by traffic from seaburn on a183 going to town
a lot (most drivers when turning right then want to get into the left hand lane in preparation to be in left hand lane to go over bridge.

Google Maps

This has the effect of blocking traffic up church st north and roker ave.

where the road works are, it is clearly marked "use both lanes" but no drivers know best

as op said. those that use both lanes are lambasted by those who cannot even read

What part of this do people have a problem with?
Today I was at Tyne Dock in Shields (going out of town) and the roundabout before the roadworks was total gridlock because everyone was trying to get in the "right" lane. I got to the roundabout and there was the sign "use both lanes" so I trundled down the inside lane doing my bit to relieve the traffic at the roundabout, however my good deed was thrown back in my face when no bastard would let me in when I got to the cones.
I managed to squeeze in front of an Insignia and he went crackas blaring his horn and giving me the wanker sign.

Obviously the SMB resident Reginald Molehusbands will deem me to be in the wrong so let the abuse begin
I was in an Audi as well.
It usually says use both lanes and merge in turn. You didn’t merge in turn.

Gerrin - the first one that reckons I was in the wrong.
I did say I trundled down to the cones, then had to squeeze in (was actually after about 5 or 6 cars hadn't let me in). So when it says "use both lanes" you take it to mean you drive down to the cones and just park up?

we have had this before and use both lanes means just that. merge in turn is also pretty self explanatory as well.

You passed other cars and therefore didn’t merge in turn. They were wrong but so were you.

It’s very self explanatory. It definitely doesn’t mean drive past a load of cars who were in front of you- thereby not merging in turn.
He was equally as wrong as they were.

How could I not pass other cars? If I waited at the top of the queue to merge in turn it would have backed up onto the roundabout - and that what was causing the gridlock. Both lanes need to be full of cars to avoid the gridlock, and that could only happen if I overtook cars in the other lane. You're wrong on this one mate, do you drive?

Yes I drive. I have also said that the others were also wrong.
And be honest you do this to jump the queue not to help the traffic flow better.

So the sign says "use both lanes" but you think I should have ignored that and started to merge just at the roundabout with everyone else? I should mention that when I did it about half a dozen cars followed me. And I didn't hammer it down to the front of the queue, I've already explained that I drove slowly down, but yes I overtook a few cars or the whole thing would have been pointless.
What other road traffic signs do you recommend I ignore?

And I don't do it to jump the queue, if the traffic is not backing up onto the roundabout I go straight into the right lane. I'm at work so don't need to get anywhere quickly.

he wasnt wrong...
He was. And actually if the other lane was constantly moving he could even be prosecuted for driving without consideration to other road users.

Also all the drivers in the lane he is trying to merge into have right of way over him - so nobody has to let him in.

What bit of gridlock do you not understand - and why would they put a sign up asking to use both lanes - so you would have just ignored the sign?:lol:

If that last bit is right then fair enough. But 99% of the time people are just queue jumping and waffle on about having the right to do it.
If you are merging you don’t have the right of way.
I would solve the whole thing by making both lanes merge into a third lane.

It didn't say "merge in turn" mate - it said "use both lanes". And when it does say the former they mean at the beginning of the cones - when the lanes merge into one.

What a load of bollocks.

You merge in turn when required to, in this case when one of the lanes begins to drop out. How on earth would you be prosecuted for following the direction given on a road sign? You haven’t thought this through have you?
