It would be because your a shit fan who wont put his games on the table because you know they would pale into insignificance. Just be honest put them up there. Do you remember David Hodgson getting into a skirmish with the chicken run at West ham in 1984 when trying to retrieve the ball for a throw in? What accommodation did you stay at when you travelled to Wembley for the Mercantile Credit Classic? Tell me what was significant when you approached the away end for the Watford away game in the cup in 1985? What was significant about the Burnley cup replay in 1979 when we were beaten at home? If you were there you would know.

Ive forgotten more than you will ever remember watching SAFC games and you know it ;)
A very Maggish post. My supporting history is better than yours. How would you know this? Google is your friend Mr Mag.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

You wont do it though will you because if you do it and your are honest it makes you look a complete tit. You can't win - if you put your games on the table you look like a lightweight Sunderland fan compared to me and if you continue not to do so then the reasons why you don't are obvious.

I would suggest google wouldn't be much good in trying to find out about Hodgson at West ham or what SAFC fans were singing right through half time at Villa away when we lost 1-0 to a Rideout goal. I doubt the bother outside the Deepdale pub at 2.30 in the 3rd division season was particularly well documented. You of course will remember it well having been there and that.

Gee up. I think you have him.

When was the last time a team pulled out of a "major" european competition at the quarter final stage ?
1969 fairs cup. Hamburg "stepped aside".

Hamburg didn’t step aside; 3 rearranged games following postponed games in the German League meant that they couldn’t arrange dates for the Fairs Cup ties within the dates for Quarter Final ties to take place before the Semi Finals started and they were forced to withdraw.

So stepped aside then ;)

Out of curiosity, what was significant about Watford and Burnley away ?

The Watford away game was the queues really. 5000 had travelled down and there was only two turnstiles open and it was quite dangerously congested and many got in late. The Burnley game was a home cup game, a replay where we got tortured by Styeve Kindon and Leighton James. The significance was our young keeper who made his one and only appearance for us because of injuries to Siddall and Turner IIRC.

Cheers, isn’t google brilliant ;)

Are they still claiming they “qualified” for the cup they’ve now called the UEFA Cup?:lol::lol::lol:

Posting smiley faces, a sign of acceptance. I’ve provided overwhelming evidence of the competition, the rules, how teams were nominated (through league position), the regard in which it was held and the obvious reason why it is not listed as an Uefa trophy but they themselves recognise it as the predecessor. The older Sunderland supporters who were around at time will know what a fantastic achievement it was. You should talk to them, hopefully the rewriting of history on Wearside hasn’t clouded the truth.
