Jesus Christ does nobody check their facts on here or read linked pieces? Newcastle were not ‘invited’ to play in it, they qualified automatically through their league position and the qualifying rules applied by our own FA, the 1 city 1 club rule was abolished by The Fairs Cup back in 1961. Trying to apply the early rules to Newcastle’s qualification is too ridiculous for words. If by invitation you mean like Man City being invited to play in the Champions League this season by finishing in a qualifying position in the league I’ll take the point; they don’t have to play in it after all. The rules when Newcastle won The Fairs Cup in 69 were the same as when Spurs won the first Uefa Cup in 72.
They were UEFA rules and the one club per city rule wasn't abolished until 1975.

This is just silly, by the time Newcastle won it, it had evolved into the competition UEFA took over, this was as a direct result of its evolution, the fact that is was recognised as the 2nd most prestigious European trophy (as noted in the above articles) meant the UEFA wanted control over it. The 1 club 1 city rule was done away with in 1961, our own FA decided to continue with it after it became the UEFA Cup until Everton complained. UEFA do acknowledge it as the forerunner and reference the when Leeds won it in 1968 it started a run of 6 consecutive wins by English clubs. This covers the transformation to the UEFA Cup and the year in which Newcastle won it. It should be remembered that UEFA don’t list Fairs Cup winners as Uefa Cup Winners as there was a name change, bit like neither Sunderland or Newcastle have won the Premier League (or that trophy) and aren’t listed as winners but both have won the Football League title.

"In 1968 Leeds United AFC became the first northern European club to win the trophy, heralding a run of six successive wins by English clubs.

Name change The fifth of these was in 1971/72, won by Tottenham Hotspur FC, and the first to be known as the UEFA Cup. The change of name was recognition of the fact the competition was now run by UEFA and no longer associated with the trade fairs."

The competition was taken over by UEFA, rather than simply created

Desperate, and in total denial of the historical facts. You cannot escape the fact that several teams were denied entry for no footballing or merit reasons, and thus it was not an open competition but remained invitational with the FA putting forward teams not having qualification on merit. The very fact that teams had byes in certain rounds and clubs would decide to just drop out even at the later stages pours scorn on its standing and totally disrespects the winners of the actual competitions that followed. Your last major competitive trophy win is 1955, nearer your founding than today, just deal with it.

Tbf he's presenting you with plenty of facts and evidence, you are the one refusing to accept empirical evidence and in denial.

Newcastle are one! Newcastle are one!

Teams that have played in European competition without winning a domestic trophy to qualify.
Newcastle
Burnley
Bolton
Millwall
Coventry
Fulham
Coventry haven’t even played in a recognized European competion. Mind they have actually won something to qualify - unfortunately English clubs were banned

Why can’t these f***ing idiots just come to terms with the fact that they haven’t won anything of major note since 1955. Deal with it you sad, deluded, gravy stained fuckwits!

I quoted my SAFC supporting history which can be supported by many on here- you seem to be a bit reluctant to put it up against mine ;)

Anyway - despite everyone hating the mags, which i agree with you on can you find one of the 60 odd million people in this country that arent SAFC fans that would argue we were bigger than them. Just one will do. They are bigger club, we are better club.

I was working in folkestone a couple of weeks ago and got talking to 6 west ham supporters, and 1 Oxford.
Most of them regarded us & the mags on a par with WH, but 2 - who were well into football history - said we were the biggest of the 3!
Was well chuffed.

And, thank God the mags never won the Texaco trophy, we'd never hear the end of it!

Uefa clarified a couple of years ago that the Fairs cup wasn't classed as an honour/title.

Are you sure. Only one club from London was allowed in Fairs cup. I am happy to give credit but it does not qualify as a bona fide European trophy as qualification was more on location than merit. A number of teams above you did not qualify. Iirc each FA from each country selected teams (or invited) to enter and most did on league position, but not England otherwise spurs, arsenal, everton and the like would have ''qualified'. Show how crap we both are if that is the measure of success.
Newcastle could have turned down the offer to enter unlike Uefa cup.

One club per city rule still enforced by the english FA.
Man City entered the european cup as champions, Man Utd entered the european cup as defending champions.
3rd place Liverpool entered the fairs cup.
4th place Leeds entered the fairs cup as defending champions.
5th everton couldn't enter due to FA still enforcing one club per city rule.
6th chelsea entered fairs cup
7th tottenham, same as everton
8th west brom won the fa cup and entered the cup winners cup
9th arsenal same problem as Tottenham and everton
10th Newcastle.

What I said. You could have turned the invitation down as well. Canny trophy but not a proper one as well you know.

Have a look at this league table from 67/68:

Man City (champions) & Man Utd (holders) went into the European cup.
3rd Liverpool & 4th Leeds went into the Fairs cup.
5th Everton miss out because of the one city one club rule (Liverpool in)
6th Chelsea in the Fairs cup.
7th Tottenham & 9th Arsenal miss out because of the one city one club rule (Chelsea in).
8th West Brom (cup winners) went into the cup winners cup.
That means 10th placed Mags were invited into the Fairs cup because of the one city one club rule still in place.

Ye fucka, I just typed all that out too. I feel violated!

They're really upping the ante with their protest plans...

Looking at the addresses, do they they realise that is only the shop that will be open by the time they get down there on 17th, the headquarters (offices etc) will more than likely shut at midday if it's open at all?
So, travel over 150 mile to shout at another shop

No mate, that arsehole @Friendly Fire has stated on numerous occasions they ‘qualified’ for it, not invited. He also mentioned something about facts, I seem to find I turn off when a gravy stained Greggs muncher mentions facts.

Anybody would think Sunderland were cheated out of Fairs Cup place due to one city rule. Rather than being so shit they couldn’t even manage bare minimum10th place to qualify

If it’s good enough for Barcelona to claim as major honour it’s good enough for Newcastle
