First two articles on the Trophy on a Google search (rather than searching for anything that has failed to check any facts and supports your argument)

But ultimately- what do UEFA themselves say: Here's the entire history of the Europa League AND ITS PREDECESSORS. Odd then that it starts in 71/72, isn't it? @What A Waster

This is just silly, by the time Newcastle won it, it had evolved into the competition UEFA took over, this was as a direct result of its evolution, the fact that is was recognised as the 2nd most prestigious European trophy (as noted in the above articles) meant the UEFA wanted control over it. The 1 club 1 city rule was done away with in 1961, our own FA decided to continue with it after it became the UEFA Cup until Everton complained. UEFA do acknowledge it as the forerunner and reference the when Leeds won it in 1968 it started a run of 6 consecutive wins by English clubs. This covers the transformation to the UEFA Cup and the year in which Newcastle won it. It should be remembered that UEFA don’t list Fairs Cup winners as Uefa Cup Winners as there was a name change, bit like neither Sunderland or Newcastle have won the Premier League (or that trophy) and aren’t listed as winners but both have won the Football League title.

()
"In 1968 Leeds United AFC became the first northern European club to win the trophy, heralding a run of six successive wins by English clubs.

Name change The fifth of these was in 1971/72, won by Tottenham Hotspur FC, and the first to be known as the UEFA Cup. The change of name was recognition of the fact the competition was now run by UEFA and no longer associated with the trade fairs."

The competition was taken over by UEFA, rather than simply created

So apart from the name, the format, the qualification process and the actual cup itself, you’re saying it’s the same as the UEFA Cup.

From what you’re saying, it sounds more to me like UEFA wanted to create their own tournament and got rid of any competition provided by similar tournaments by simply taking over and scrapping them. This kind of thing happens all the time in business.

So you haven’t read the article? The format or qualification processes weren’t changed by Uefa and Uefa say it was the predecessor and include Newcastle as part of the consecutive winners. Different name and trophy yes, but as you say that happens quite regularly; Jules Rimet Trophy, League Cup, Premier League and of course the Uefa Cup itself. Are people seriously suggesting that the competition Newcastle won was a tin pot meaningless trophy that had no direct relation to the Uefa Cup? Fine if folk are just being a WUM but if they genuinely believe it having knowledge of the full facts then that’s just mad. There’s some spectacular rewriting of history that I know has led to some Sunderland supporters actually believing this but that is out of ignorance and is fuelled by petty allegiances from those peddling the propaganda to them.

Remember this one from the last attempt at discrediting Newcastle's Fairs Cup win.

You do realise that all of these other clubs you mention did actually play in the Fairs Cup but weren’t good to win it (we beat Inter the year after we won it)? Save for Real Madrid who kept winning La Liga or the Spanish Cup and didn’t appear until the first season it became the Uefa Cup.

You clearly have no idea how good Ujpest Dozsa were at that time (won the Hungarian League 8 times in 10 years and following their defeat to us they got to 2 QF and 1 SF of the European Cup in the next 4 years).

As comparison the same year we won the Fairs Cup Dunfermline Athletic got to SF of the CWC a competition won by Slovan Bratislava in front of 19k fans (our average home attendance in the Fairs Cup was over 55k and the combined attendance for the SF was over 130k) against a Barcelona side that had only played 3 ties to get to the final. This was a Barcelona side that the previous year had lost in the 1st round of the Fairs Cup and the year after lost in the 3rd round of the Fairs Cup (to Inter who we beat in the 1st round the following year).

It’s quite clear which was the stronger competition.

By the way, the Fairs Cup abolished the 1 club 1 city rule as far back as 61/62 but the English FA continued to apply this until 1974 by which time it was the Uefa Cup and Everton kicked off about it.

Agree with you on this.

I would be embarrassed trying to argue we were a bigger club than them up the road if I was in a reasoned debate with a fan of another club.

They would just turn around and say you're in league 1 and they're in the premier league ... end of debate and me feeling like a mug.

Only place it's acceptable to say such things is on here where some people think they are seen as bigger/more die hard MLF if you say Sunderland are a bigger club, when in reality it's just not the case, doesn't make you any less of a supporter to be a realist and not spout shite.

Majority of people who do so are bairns or keyboard warriors who get worked up by mags on their forum, I enjoy the debates and it's all banter to me, I wouldn't let it ruin my day if a mag posted something on here to wind us up, our day will come as will theirs, that's the life of a football fan you have to enjoy the highs and ride out the lows.

Ironically a lot of people are loving our lowest point in my lifetime because of the simple fact we are winning, I am too but as long as it's just this season and we make progress next year, we are playing well below the clubs potential.

Ignore the people questioning your support mate, you've been there and seen it all, your experienced enough to rise above childish digs about who's a bigger club and to prove it.

And for what it's worth, I do see Leicester as a bigger club than Newcastle, thanks to their recent league win, perhaps in another 10 years time that will change, we'l just have to wait and see
:oops::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

League titles at a time when there are only 14 professional clubs should count 3 times higher than FA cups? Are you serious?

And because people out outside of the north east can say so from a neutral standpoint.
Most fans of other clubs can't stand the mags because they think they're self entitled arseholes. Don't kid yourselves that everybody likes you … They don't.

So you lot won a trophy for losers who'd hosted a trade fair and you're trying to say it has equal merit to the Uefa cup which was for teams who actualy qualified by league placing … Righty ho :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I quoted my SAFC supporting history which can be supported by many on here- you seem to be a bit reluctant to put it up against mine ;)

Anyway - despite everyone hating the mags, which i agree with you on can you find one of the 60 odd million people in this country that arent SAFC fans that would argue we were bigger than them. Just one will do. They are bigger club, we are better club.
