England in Sri Lanka Red Ball

Depends who they wanted to have the time in the middle. Obvs Root and Burns and stokes need batting time … I was surprised how high Denly came in, maybe he wanted a good look at him in these conditions. And it sounds like they wanted the wickie options have a bat. Maybe they were confident about the batting form of ali.
Denly down to bat at no 3 apparently.

Yeah I think so. I reckon Modern would do a job this winter at no3 but would not fancy him against those Aussie quicks next summer.

I though Mo was going to bat 3 in this series while England think about who might come in at a later date. Clearly Denly is getting a shot at it, wonder if Mo will sulk a bit though....

Can't bat 3 when he is going to be bowling all day

Mo doesnt come across as the sulky type. I reckon he'll be happy to play wherever is needed. Which he's done well in the past. Im sure hes batted in most positions already.

I just don't understand what the fuck they were playing at in that warm up

we have lost 9 out of our last 10 away from home or someit, we are in sri lanka, we let 4 seamers bowler, no leach, no stone who is the quickets by far

we let rashid and denly take the 2nd new ball

But if we have three spinners, he'll hardly be bowling all day.

I don't know. He says he wants a shot at the top order and whilst I agree with the consensus that he'd struggle at three versus the Aussies, I don't see many other better ideas.

And Jennings is still in the bloody team, which irks me.

Leach has been the best spinner in the CC for years

I just don’t get why we don’t want to play him

Rashid and Ali played in Pakistan and India and were very poor

Reet lads, just ordered mesel some DCCC gear to wear at the Galle test, but not there til the third day. Look forward to seeing any other DCCC supporters there.

The way the weather is out there atm the third day might be part of the first/second play-wise.

I've got no recent news about tickets so winging it atm. I'll be there with me Pompey PO Club flag.

I thought if I'm going it for some of the games I can be afforded the honour of starting the thread. And will post some pics from Galle & Kandy, hopefully with fellow SAFC/DCCC fans.
You there yet in Sri Lanka? Or just doing Galle test?

That's a different topic.

I'm inclined to agree, not wild about Rashid. Was best bowler in the ODIs but we've been here before.

I don't mind any of them individually bud, just as a duo they haven't worked.

I just think we overcomplicate spin, looking for a mystery or special bowler, or one who can bowl a bit and bat. Aussie's did it loads after Warne, then eventually found that just a decent consistent spinner in Lyon was the way to go

Feel we are searching for it too much after Swann, not saying Leach is a world beater, but he can bowl 6 balls in the same spot, which is a start.

I am probs reading far too much into a 2 day game, just feels like muddled thinking again.

I don't think I'd play Leach at home because I think Moeen is a better spinner when on form, which he usually is at home. And that's even without his batting. I think if the structure of the side allows you to gamble with two spinners at home, its worth one of them being a leggie but maybe that we should just pick Moeen and four quicks and be done with it.

Don't think that applies in places like Sri Lanka where the pitch provides all you need and control is more important. So yes, I would lean towards playing Leach in this series, not Rashid. Especially as Denley allows you a leggie option too.

Leach is SLA so naturally bowls leg breaks.

A wrist spinner should normally …. get more turn, be less accurate, have more variations, be more expensive, take more wickets if he's good and his inaccuracy has'nt allowed the batsmen to hit him out of the game

OTOH

Leach is good, leach takes wickets Leach will be more accurate (probably).

So there is a case for Leach if you're looking for a variation from an off-spinner.

Personally, I'd like Leach to get a run. I think he's good, I don't know if he's good enough but I'd like to find out.

Leach is a much much better 4 day bowler than Rashid in my opinion

He offers control

He has to play

It will turn square, as that's their only chance of beating us, so play all 3 and Denly.

Odd post. You say Leach is a left-armer so naturally bowls leg breaks. This is a fallacy - its not just about the way the ball turns, it's also about flight, trajectory and type of spin. But then you seem to understand that because it the very next sentence you explain perfectly the differences in outcome. Odd.

I agree with your conclusion. Let's see what he's got.

Another question into the mix.

Which seamer plays with Stokes and Anderson. I'm going to be boring here and say Broad. But some are, probably rightly, saying lets have a look at Stone and/or Curran, both for development reasons and because Broad is not a natural bowler for this type of surface. Both those two have skiddier actions and are more stump to stump bowlers, so its not total madness.

Stone does it at 90mph which is useful anywhere.

Ok. The ball breaks from the leg but he's not what we'd understand as a 'leggie'. Thought it was a reasonable post tbh.
