Because he took them up as champions and kept them up reasonably comfortably last year.
They were a point off 3rd bottom after 20 games, not that comfortable tbh.

After spending an absolute fortune. He's done the minimum expected in the Championship, whilst taking them down once and having them rock bottom another in his time in charge in the Premier League. Apart from his name, he's done a very poor job.

I don't think Bruce's inability as a manager has any relevance to the job Benitez has done. We'll just have to agree to disagree about his time at Newcastle, IMO he's been very poor given what he's spent in both wages and transfer fees.Bruce couldn’t manage it twice at Villa and spent a fortune. Anyway as I said I don’t think he’s done a great job. A decent one no more.

As in only won it by a point ahead of Brighton on the last day despite spending an absolute fortune and a lot more than Brighton. You can't scrape a title
Being at the top of any league after nearly 40 games? Did Leicester scrape it when they won the premier league? As in only won it by a point ahead of Brighton on the last day despite spending an absolute fortune and a lot more than Brighton.
No they won it by about 10 points, that’s winning it easily. The mags scraped to the title in 2016 as they spent a fortune and only won it by a point overtaking Brighton on the last day.Being at the top of any league after nearly 40 games? Did Leicester scrape it when they won the premier league?

Summit along them lines I think, they let the mags in the back door to pinch the title.Brighton threw it away, didn't they? Something like one point from their last 3 games?
I can't remember. I don't really follow them but I do know that nobody flukes a league.Brighton threw it away, didn't they? Something like one point from their last 3 games?

Most days out of anybody top of the league, most wins, best defence, joint highest scorers.
94 points Newcastle, 93 Brighton.
Newcastle were 12 clear of 3rd place.
Newcastle and Brighton were both excellent that season. If it was won on something low like 76 points and there were several teams all close to us,then you could say it was scraped, but Newcastle and Brighton were both miles better than everybody else.
Its funny how before the season started, on here people were saying we'd struggle, Benitez had no experience in the championship, mid table at best, but once we've won the league it has become "well you should've won it anyway, all that money". So we either acheived par, or exceeded expectations. Unless it should've been won in march or something which would have meant a 120 point season.
