After spending an absolute fortune. He's done the minimum expected in the Championship, whilst taking them down once and having them rock bottom another in his time in charge in the Premier League. Apart from his name, he's done a very poor job.

Bruce couldn’t manage it twice at Villa and spent a fortune. Anyway as I said I don’t think he’s done a great job. A decent one no more.

I don't think Bruce's inability as a manager has any relevance to the job Benitez has done. We'll just have to agree to disagree about his time at Newcastle, IMO he's been very poor given what he's spent in both wages and transfer fees.

Does anyone know the background/history of his backroom team? I have had a quick look on Wikipedia and they seem a mixture of both Spanish and English staff with basically no extended information.

Just it's being questioned on here before as to who some of the staff on the bench are but no one seems to know. What is the background of his assistant manager or head of recruitment etc?

Only information I can find some background on is Antonio Gómez Pérez who is listed as first team coach having previously been with RB at Liverpool before managing some Spanish clubs then coming back to be with RB at Napoli, Real Madrid, and Newcastle. He failed in his managerial roles.

Only other information is on Simon Smith their head goalkeeping coach who was with us once a non-contract basis and never played.

He hasn’t really spent that much tbf. Di Matteo spent all their money and left Bruce with very little, although he did rinse what he had on Terry’s wages. He’s just been absolute shite.

Being at the top of any league after nearly 40 games? Did Leicester scrape it when they won the premier league?
No they won it by about 10 points, that’s winning it easily. The mags scraped to the title in 2016 as they spent a fortune and only won it by a point overtaking Brighton on the last day.

Replacing Mitrovic and Gayle with Joselu and the Japanese doesn't look like a strengthening of the team to me.
But that will be Ashley's fault as well, no doubt.

Most days out of anybody top of the league, most wins, best defence, joint highest scorers.
94 points Newcastle, 93 Brighton.
Newcastle were 12 clear of 3rd place.
Newcastle and Brighton were both excellent that season. If it was won on something low like 76 points and there were several teams all close to us,then you could say it was scraped, but Newcastle and Brighton were both miles better than everybody else.

Its funny how before the season started, on here people were saying we'd struggle, Benitez had no experience in the championship, mid table at best, but once we've won the league it has become "well you should've won it anyway, all that money". So we either acheived par, or exceeded expectations. Unless it should've been won in march or something which would have meant a 120 point season.

Tbf, you spend a huge sum of money.
