BBC license fee

They can't have it both ways. In avoiding taking on advertising they've always the 'unique' way they're funded (forcing everyone in the UK to pay for content they can resell) means they're not subject to the same commercial pressures when creating shows as other broadcasters. They can't then turn around and follow other broadcasters because someone else has found a more lucrative model.

I love it how BBC fans think that because they like it, the fee should remain.

Well yes, I’d like the rest of the country to contribute to paying for my interests as well. It isn’t going to happen, though.
It might be great value to its fans, but it’s terrible value if you watch it for one or two programmes a week, or not at all.
You don't have to pay it though.....

Same as my mate, never had a license since he’s lived alone. The TVL wannabe cops bothered him for a while then gave up.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a license to own or use a TV. Also, the TVL people have no right whatsoever to enter your home. You can simply tell them to leave your property, close the door and go back to watching the telly. YouTube, of course...
So how come you see these videos of the TVL tossers turning up with “warrants” and the coppers assisting them to enter your property? When really they’re only meant to stop a breach of the peace.
This has always been a grey area for me so if anyone has any experience I’d love to hear it.

If you have a TV Licence (n) then you are licensed (v) to watch TV. Top tip. Nouns and verbs. If we put aside the legal loophole closed by the govt and refer to it as the TV Licence then it is good value for the money. I'd like to pay nothing but you get nowt for nowt so, grudgingly, it's worth the money to me. I'd like to see the big sporting events like cricket tests and football as part of the BBC but the rights to buy are way beyond anything but the reaches of subscriber TV. A mix of TVL fee, a firestick and a good internet sports 'provider' suits me. Total of £200pa broken down monthly I can live with.

The first time they visit they have zero right to enter your property without permission. If at that stage you give them reasonable suspicion that an offence is occuring then they apply for a search warrant. If they have that warrant then you have to allow them to execute it or it is a criminal offence. A simple 'no' at the door when asked if they can come in is not grounds for a warrant, the easiest way to get one would be to start waffling on about freemen of the land or visibly be watching tv when they arrive.

Best practice in my experience is to ask them to make an appointment, they will refuse as they say random visits are the best way for themselves to operate. However as you have asked them not to call at random times they will no longer call at all, they will also not get a warrant as you have asked them to make a reasonable adjustment and that in itself is not evidence of breaking the law. Warrants are a powerful tool but not often gained as the optics of constantly entering houses to find no crime would be much worse publicity than they could handle.

I've always said it is one of the best value for money things i pay for and when you pay by monthly dd it is comparible on price to netflix. I am a netflix subscriber but would say i watch live bbc tv and iplayer more. Also use it as my primary source of online news.

Which is fine but it is subsidised by people who have no choice to pay it should they wish to watch other live tv programmes.

It's for the good of the nation Harry. Diverse programming and educational content that would not be able to be done under a different model or would end up subsidised anyway from the gov.

even if they do get in your house...what are they looking for?... a telly?...someone actually sitting watching the BBC?

Live streaming of tv, if your watching Netflix or YouTube and the like there’s no law against it.
The problem comes when people have the aerials attached to the TVs or virgin boxes etc as these give the facility to watch live tv.
As said earlier you don’t have to give the tv man access to your property and I guess if you are watching live tv keep the curtains closed so he can’t witneas you watching.
I think the licence covers all live streaming of tv too not just bbc, even though they get the vast majority of the money with a little bit kicked to chan 4 iirc

Everybody should have a national broadcaster, IMO.

They need to evolve like.

Every programme they have ever made should be available on the iPlayer for a start.

I’d imagine people wouldn’t feel as shafted if this was the case as you’re then getting a massive choice for your money....especially when all programs that have been made have been funded by the licence payer

Interesting discussion today. Should they follow the Amazon/Netflix option with the streaming service ?

BBC’s revenue is about £5 billion whilst Netflix is over double that.

Could possible help the quality of the BBC as well.
Quality seems fine to me. People love Bodyguard, Dr Who etc. It's a wonderful vehicle for developing British talent

As sad as it is, it also needs to massively trim staff and share resource across departments.
