Private IVF

Some good advice here.
I would like to back up the stop thinking about it and enjoy it (if possible).
We had been trying for 3 years or a thereabouts. Nothing happening and Mrs K was considering looking at adoption.

We went on holiday and enjoyed ourselves. Came back and a couple of weeks later - bingo.
Needless to say I wasn't expecting it. I think Mrs K did 5 tests to be sure!

GP would be a good starting point as they could do a private referral for you, plus they can talk through the test results on the Mrs hormone levels. I worked briefly at the unit at James Cook, which does have a good success rate but over 40 you're looking at a 10-20% chance.

A private consultation with a consultant would probably be about £150 and they'd be able to give you a better estimate of the chances, costs involved (maybe 5k), what's involved an what the next steps would be. If you want to go for it, I'd look at it as buying hope as it does keep that dream going.

Cheers mate. I’m wary of cost, as I’d probably keep trying until there was no chance. At the same time, I’d happily pay 10k+ if I knew it would result in another child.

I've been unsure whether to ask on here, especially with me not having much anonymity anymore, but here goes.

Has anyone on here had/having any experience with private IVF treatment?

Me and the missus (no) have been trying for another child for over 4 years, alas, to no avail. We've both been for sperm/egg testing, (I thought coming in a cup, in a hospital room, whilst simultaneously looking at pictures and reading a story from 2 Razzles, would've been a tad more tricky) which were both fine. I'm 40 and she's 44, so we've no chance on the NHS. We understand our chances will be diminished due to our ages.
I'm willing to pay, as we're desperate for another, but we're not sure where to go. As in, I'd imagine even a consultation to be expensive, thus, it'll be imperative to find a good clinic with high success rate, as it could end up being a hell of a lot of money.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Bloke who used to work for me about 10 year ago did it, second marriage and she was desperate for a kid.

Said he spent 20 grand on private IVF. Got twin boys and said it was worth every penny.

Mine bought about 10 for our first and we hadn't been trying long.

Best of luck to the OP. 44 is not too old at all with modern day IVF techniques.

Not guranteed
Mate went through 3 treatments eventually had a boy then had another ine naturally 2 years later
Very best of luck
Is it worth mentioning adoption to you?

I’ve thought about it, especially if it gives a child a better chance in life. But I’d definitely rather have my own, so to speak.

I appreciate where you're coming from - I was really hoping we would have our own and thankfully we did - and hopefully we will again.
I was prepared to keep trying until I was told by Doctors "It's not going to happen".

That said I know several people who have adopted and the you'll be amazed how much "your own" they become.
Nurture over nature, marra. Get them a Sunderland shirt. Make sure their first word is "Ha'way" and you're on the right track :)

I wish I could just hand over 20k and be guaranteed a child. It would be worth every penny.
I bet it’s also hard to take if you spend said amount and nothing comes of it.
Certainly a lot of big decisions involved in IVF.

The Centre for Life were excellent for us - staff were fantastic. It was hard work for Mrs with regular bloods / injections etc. IVF gave us the helping hand we needed first time of asking. Very blessed. We got referred there from GP.

I may be wrong but Private may be the only option - not sure if the NHS would refer if you already have a child. We would now have to pay if we wanted to try again for any more. At least that was what we were told a few year ago.

Funnily enough, some of the first words I taught our Harry was ‘Marco Gabbiadini’.

He didn't mind admitting he lost sleep over it, as you say great if it's guaranteed. Loans, credit cards, he did the lot.

All the very best mate, I hope it works out whatever you choose.

I think if you are dead certain about it then it will likely be the private route as Sunderland CCG (if thats whereabouts you are) will only pay for IVF for one full cycle for women aged 40-42. Anything above that and it wont be funded by the NHS.

I cant believe someone hasnt posted the best bit of advice in the meantime

"Stick in there" :eek::eek:

We succeeded privately. I can't stress how highly we can speak of Gateshead QE. A bit of background - I already had 3 from my first marriage, I also had a vasectomy after the 3rd (2002). We split up and i met my new wife (no), decided we wanted to try so had a vasectomy reversal at Washington, 8 years after the reversal, needless to say there was not a high chance of it working, but it did. We tried for about 4 years to conceive naturally but it didn't work, had tests done and there were 'issues' on both sides - me having had a reversal and the mrs had a few anomalies. Went to the local GP and they referred us to Sunderland where we had tests done and they basically said we'd be wasting our money as the chances were so low. Obviously we were gutted. I kept looking into things on the internet and we decided to ask the doctor to refer us to the QE (purely because we'd both been treat their for other illnesses/surgery and couldn't praise the hospital enough. The fertility staff were brilliant, did loads of different test ( a lot more than Sunderland) and basically said that IVF wouldn't work but there was a 28% chance with ICSI. Obviously that seems really low but given our ages (I was 42 and my wife was 36) and the biological problems we had it was actually not too bad (albeit still an very outside chance). We decided to go ahead with it, we went into the hospital to pick up the first set of needles in June 2015 and Thomas was born August 2016. It's a very emotional and also physically draining for the mam, also very expensive (£6500) but oh my god is it worth it.

Sometimes this (in red above) stops conception. Maybe relax and not be too stressed whether you have another or not, and you may find nature plays it's part.

I feel for you as wanting a child and not conceiving can be a monthly wrench.

Can your fertility clinic/GP/Nurse at least explain why conception isn't happening ? Once you have this information you may know how to proceed.

Google secondary infertility (I'm saying this as it sounds like you have a child already).

Good luck!

I have been diagnosed with secondary infertility, our Investigations at Sunderland Royal ended at the beginning of this month, for some reason I no longer ovulate and medication hasnt helped me.
As I already have a child (OH doesnt) we are allowed anything on NHS I've just turned 41 (yesterday) and finding a lot of avenues blocked off due to age. Also, I have low AMH too so even my consultant advised against ivf as it's highly unlikely it will work.
A friend of mine has just used a clinic in Sheffield (if I recall correctly, possibly Jessop?) And they are pregnant, due very soon.

I wish you all the luck in the world, such a stressful time And it totally takes over you.

Xx

Really pleased to hear it worked out for you's, especially against the odds. It certainly gives hope.

IVF certainly sounds a demanding, and possibly upsetting time. But obviously well worth it if it comes off.
I hope you succeed if you decide to give it a go.

Best of luck marra. Can’t really add any advice re private treatment but can empathise with the situation. I believe the conception success rate is generally around 33% and we were third time lucky. It’s an emotional roller-coaster but, if successful, definitely worth it. Although having to listen to Fun Kids UK can be a bit annoying.
