Private IVF

Really pleased to hear it worked out for you's, especially against the odds. It certainly gives hope.

IVF certainly sounds a demanding, and possibly upsetting time. But obviously well worth it if it comes off.
I hope you succeed if you decide to give it a go.

It is demanding but the clinic will do everything to work to your schedule. My wife is a Teacher and we were had a fortnight in a house in Spain booked in the July so they basically planned it so that she took the first lot of injections whilst we were away, it was ideal, she could literally get up on a morning, take the injection and then laze by the pool all day. Those are the things you don't realise until you go for the initial consultation and they go through everything with you. From memory the initial appointment/consultation was about £200. In the scheme of things £200 for some proper advice from the people who know is well worth it, in my opinion.

I've been unsure whether to ask on here, especially with me not having much anonymity anymore, but here goes.

Has anyone on here had/having any experience with private IVF treatment?

Me and the missus (no) have been trying for another child for over 4 years, alas, to no avail. We've both been for sperm/egg testing, (I thought coming in a cup, in a hospital room, whilst simultaneously looking at pictures and reading a story from 2 Razzles, would've been a tad more tricky) which were both fine. I'm 40 and she's 44, so we've no chance on the NHS. We understand our chances will be diminished due to our ages.
I'm willing to pay, as we're desperate for another, but we're not sure where to go. As in, I'd imagine even a consultation to be expensive, thus, it'll be imperative to find a good clinic with high success rate, as it could end up being a hell of a lot of money.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
Had 2 goes at the Centre for Life and miraculously both were successful.

It's very stressful and time consuming when you're going through it. The series of appointments, tests and form filling is painful. Obviously cost is an issue too.

But 10 years after the first success I can honestly say it was a wonderful thing.

Good luck but most of all, go for it. Don't regret not trying.

Sometimes this (in red above) stops conception. Maybe relax and not be too stressed whether you have another or not, and you may find nature plays it's part.

I feel for you as wanting a child and not conceiving can be a monthly wrench.

Good luck!

@Ghandi Floss When I read your message this was pretty much exactly my first thoughts. Stop trying. I watched a close family member go through hell trying for there first. Years of trying and 4 IVFs I think, 3 at there own cost. Nearly split them up as doctors said there wasn’t anything untoward with either.
Finally gave up and started adoption process as they were about to hit 40.
She fell pregnant 3 months later. She swears it was all down to the stress of trying.
Good luck mate.

We succeeded privately. I can't stress how highly we can speak of Gateshead QE. A bit of background - I already had 3 from my first marriage, I also had a vasectomy after the 3rd (2002). We split up and i met my new wife (no), decided we wanted to try so had a vasectomy reversal at Washington, 8 years after the reversal, needless to say there was not a high chance of it working, but it did. We tried for about 4 years to conceive naturally but it didn't work, had tests done and there were 'issues' on both sides - me having had a reversal and the mrs had a few anomalies. Went to the local GP and they referred us to Sunderland where we had tests done and they basically said we'd be wasting our money as the chances were so low. Obviously we were gutted. I kept looking into things on the internet and we decided to ask the doctor to refer us to the QE (purely because we'd both been treat their for other illnesses/surgery and couldn't praise the hospital enough. The fertility staff were brilliant, did loads of different test ( a lot more than Sunderland) and basically said that IVF wouldn't work but there was a 28% chance with ICSI. Obviously that seems really low but given our ages (I was 42 and my wife was 36) and the biological problems we had it was actually not too bad (albeit still an very outside chance). We decided to go ahead with it, we went into the hospital to pick up the first set of needles in June 2015 and Thomas was born August 2016. It's a very emotional and also physically draining for the mam, also very expensive (£6500) but oh my god is it worth it.

Same situation as us and it worked first time. I remind myself a lot that the little bugger is a miracle.

You get used to the injections. I did 51 in all, but I have a friend who had far less.

Bizarelly we've still got a bag full of the loaded syringes at the back of the garage. Never got round to taking them to a pharmacist for disposal and now 6 years later am a bit embarrassed turning saying "whoops look what we have in our garage"

All good points. The wife has also said perhaps I’m over thinking/pressuring it, thus, having a negative effect.
Amazing what stress and pressure can put on the human body mate, you hear so many stories about people having treatment and it not working, then I guess people accept it’s not going to happen and the pressure on the couple drops...and then bang, she falls pregnant!

How you take the stress away when it means so much, I’m afraid I wouldn’t have a clue, like with most things, but best of luck pal!

Pisses me off, the amount of folk who have kids and don’t give a fuck about them, when theirs people like you who are desperate to be parents and would give owt to be a mam / dad.

Hope it goes well

Top notch advice Keithy!
Though It does seem more of a chore having sex once you’re married.
Cue volunteers. Joking apart, Radio Mag is advertising the Inside Out TV programme next week which is about sperm donors (not kebabs).

All good points. The wife has also said perhaps I’m over thinking/pressuring it, thus, having a negative effect.
Typical woman blaming the bloke's performance ;)

Gis a ring crawballs.
Life centre Newcastle. We went through it, hit the jackpot first time.

Mate spoke to his GP, got referred to the Centre for Life in Newcastle.
Reckoned it was about £8k a shot and his Mrs was put off with the description of the process, she was a bit squeamish i think.

Good luck
Surprised if its 8 grand mind. We went through it 10 yearago, cost then 3grand. It was 600 notes for the drugs alone.

QE Gateshead are brilliant. We weren't private and was NHS but felt every much as if it was a private process.

My wife is currently carrying our 1st child due in December.

We have embryos in freezer which we can use again but we'd have to pay for future procedures.

5 years trying for a family & finally getting there.

We feel blessed!

Adoption for us now, first appointment in a few weeks. See where we go from there.
As much as we would love to have one of our own, there are plenty just waiting for that cuddle from a new Mammy and Daddy.

We went down this route eventually - remember the tears rolling down my face driving our little one home for the first time knowing they would be living with us for ever.

As I type this just realised it was 8 years ago this weekend that we did this special journey home.

Not local to you but there is a calculator here - Dedicated To Supporting You through Your Fertility Treatment

It is based at the Womens in Liverpool. We went there, back in 2004, and saw the famous Mr Kingsland, when my missus finished Chemo, to assess the likelihood of conceiving after the effects of Chemo. As it happened we didn't need any treatment as it all happen naturally (x3) but these are renowned experts in this area.

Seems he is now in Wales - Professor Charles Kingsland | Consultant Gynaecologist and Specialist in Reproductive Medicine | Spire Healthcare

Good luck.

We had IVF twice, paid £5k in 2014 and failed, then in 2016 managed to get it on the NHS and now have a gorgeous little girl......very hard work physical and mentally, and we were offered counciling during both IVF , but didn't feel the need at the time, looking back, it would of been good to talk to someone neutral.....

Good luck.

My daughter is currently undergoing ivf at the centre for life. It’s her first nhs funded cycle there, though she had four self-funded iui cycles at Gateshead. She had an five day early blastocyst transfer on Wednesday this week, so we are in the two week wait period. Blood test next Friday to confirm whether or not it has implanted. ( Come on you little bugger, get yourself dug in there!)

There is no significant difference between self funded and nhs treatment. In both cases treatment is aimed at your problem area. Even though my daughter is only 32 she has a low ovarian reserve, which I would imagine will also apply to your partner. This cycle has basically been just chucking as many drugs as possible at her and seeing what results we get. If she had gone the private route we would be looking at £1500 just for the drugs for one cycle. Sperm if needed, can be obtained from a sperm bank for around £850. Donor eggs will cost at least a couple of thousand as you are paying for the donors treatment.

My advice would be to establish if your little swimmers are up to the job, and if your partner has sufficient eggs, of good enough quality left to get at least one blastocyst. My daughter managed to produce ten follicles, eight eggs were retrieved, three of which fertilised normally, three lasted until transfer day and one was returned to her womb. The final two were not good enough to be frozen to be used in the future so were discarded. The odds are not great.

In your situation I suggest that you look at the clinics that offer a package deal of up to three cycles for about £10,000. If you hit the target first time, it will have cost you more than a single cycle, but if you don’t get lucky first time you still have two more attempts. I believe these offers don’t include initial consultations, though you are able to get most of the preliminary tests done by the NHS. See your GP if necessary. You may also need to pay for your drugs for each cycle too. The London Women’s Clinic in Darlington offers the package deal, so that might be a good place to start if you decide to go that route. There’s a price list for nhs treatment on the Newcastle hospitals website.
Found it for you! Newcastle Hospitals - Private service

Here’s the local ccg criteria for nhs funding.

Good luck with it all.

Ahh that is lovely news. What joy you will have brought to each other.

We are at the very start of the process, so not sure what this journey is going to entail but if we can go through everything we have on the fertility treatment side then we can come through this too.

Can I ask, if not too personal, how long your journey took x

@Ghandi Floss @Sir Lancelot i
Kind of in the same situation. I’m 38 and the Mrs is 31 (No). Just gone through our first cycle of ivf with the centre for life and it’s been the best and hardest 3-4 months of my life.
Nothing wrong with either of us but nothing worked and so the CFL was where we ended up. Due to her being young and nothing wrong with her then the lowest doesage of the drugs happened. Egg retrieval picked up 3 despite being over 20 of them there and those 3 turned into 2 fertilised. I wasn’t happy as the injection was right during the extra time in the World Cup so I was furious. 2 went back in on day 3 and thankfully we are touch wood (12 weeks) pregnant, first scan A ok and she has gone from size 10 to a NFL linebacker in 7 weeks so looking good I think.
If you need any advice or help please shout as it’s been so hard but worth all the effort to get this little end result that we have been desperate for.

Sorry for the long message but any advice and I’ll gladly pass on for you.

Have you been to GP and tried any of the fertility drugs that are available? Clomid and Metformin are the 2 that I know of. Might be worth a try as know a few women who struggled to conceive and these were pretty much last gasp before trying IVF

Forgot to add, good luck!
