What sort of stuff do you listen to usually?

If you want breaking in gently then I'd recommend starting at the end of jazz nearest the stuff you would usually listen to.

For example, I came from a rock background, so I found jazz fusion and jazz-funk to be good stepping stones into "proper" jazz.

Guessing you've listened to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane etc.?

Give "The Epic" by Kamasi Washington a shot. He played on Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" and did a lot of the musical arrangement. His album is a triple so long but both beautiful and exciting in parts.

Jazz needs to be mostly vocal for me or else you end up with Cleo Laine.

His latest album's really good too. Probably marginally more accessible than The Epic for a jazz noob like the OP.
