I was scouring the top two divisions tables to see if there's anyone with money to spend who's stupid or desperate enough to pay high wages for someone who's clearly not up to it, and now that we're not there, turns out there isn't

Thing is, the harshest lesson we the fans learnt was how we thought, "OK, Di Fanti has been hired, Short must have done his homework on him so these new players will be part of a plan... Oh no, he was a bluffer in a bad wig. OK, Congerton, he's been recruited from a German club and was at Chelsea, he must know what he's doing so he'll have scouted and analysed Rodwell thoroughly.... Oh no, he's spunked one of the biggest transfer fees in our history on the footballing equivalent of homeopathy. OK,.Alvarez, maybe he's suitable...No, but OK since he's injured and we're refusing to sign him, we must have a contract clause protecting us..." Now we are so sceptical about anyone else who comes through the door because just about every stupid thing you can think of, that a large professional sports organisation is surely not dumb enough to do, we've done.

Tony Fitzpatrick is a wonderful man, but is prone to allowing his enthusiasm for St Mirren to get ahead of him. He's come up with some belting quotes in the past few years, such as aiming to get St Mirren into the Champions league, without a hint of irony.

We are all very disappointed Jack is going, but we'll move on

One thing I will add, and what makes me confident he'll do well for you, also has a sting in the tail: Jack Ross is fiercely ambitious. It will matter to him that you do well because, in his mind, that's how he's going to get a bigger gig eventually. I guess, in two or three years' time, if he's jumping ship because he's got you back to where you belong, then you won't give a shit, but that'll be in his mind from day one.

I'm fine with that. If he gets us back to the Prem then maybe we'll be the club to fulfil his ambition

Ruthless ambition......I like it.

My only concern is his knowledge of the players in the English league as he has to buy a lot!

Morden day football in a nutshell tbh.

That’s fine really, he’s not a Sunderland fan or ex player so won’t have any loyalty tied to the club. Wouldn’t blame him looking for a better job a few years down the line hopefully where we are in (or close to being in) the premier league.

What about spending? He's going to have a bit of money now (which I'm guessing he didn't have before) - does he recruit well?

He’s spoken openly about his dreams of managing Scotland.

6 successful years with us he can then take over Scotland in 2024 to prepare them for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers ;)
