The tv money from this year won’t cover the loss will be needed to cover operating costs this year. An analysis from GOM would be appreciated if he can be bothered.

jeezus...i know that, my point is they have money coming in that will help cover that loss, hardly puts them in the shit as wa sbeing suggested.

i honestly have no clue as to the point you are trying to make, my point is that although they operated at a loss this last season they have money guaranteed that will all but cover it, while the OP appears to be trying to say they are in the crap.
That's all fair enough, I just get the impression there's people on this thread going overboard thinking they'll be chucking money around like confetti and I'm trying to say I don't see how that can be the case.

Oooo so you're saying the accounts filed at Companies House will have been falsified?

No, I'm saying the numbers don't add up, particularly the £35M increase in wages. To me anyway.

In the 16/17 season, 9 players went out (including the highest earners Coloccini, Sisserker, Townsend, Wijnaldum, Janmaat) and 10 players came in. Takeaway Benitez's £5M salary, and we're led to believe that the players coming in (many of who were Championship players) were getting paid an average £3M a year or £60k a week MORE than the players they replaced?

I call bullshit......my guess is that future salaries have been brought forward and put in this financial year to inflate the actual loss. This of course suits Ashley's agenda, and coupled with the timing of the release of these figures and his 'spend what we earn' statement, is Ashley's PR team trying to shift the blame towards Benitez when he inevitably leaves this shit-show.

I'll hold my hands up if I'm wrong.

lost a record amount for an club of £80.9 million, over £221,000 a day, in 2016/17

fair point that, while i doubt ashley will be releasing mega millions (i don't even think the mags expect it to be honest) using the fact they made a loss to try to have a pop at them is pretty pointless, especially considering they are back in the money land.

All I’m doing is stating some facts.

I’m not going to sit any laugh at mike Ashley for ‘making a loss’, anyone who understands the basics of running a business would know that there are many healthy businesses that sometimes register a loss.

Getting relegated, twice, on the other hand...

That’s not a CIU club marra, still, stick the boot in on deaf people why don’t you.

Your bigging up Ashley and slagging our prospective owner off for shagging a stripper man :D

I agree with you about starting mag threads though :)

I would kill to have him running our club.

I wonder what some of our fans have in their heads where their brains should be.

He has done better than Short obviously but don't forget he took a gamble spending last season and it paid off. If they hadn't of gained promotion they would of been right in the shit.

Exactly this. Rather than as another stick to beat him with, this is yet another example of Ashley showing the sort of business nous that unfortunately seemed to elude Short.

Upon relegation, Ashley:

- Negotiated massive incoming transfer fees for relegated players
- Retained the services of Benitez and therefore ensured the fans would be satisfied
- Allowed Benitez to spend every penny of income from sales
- Green lit high wages for incoming players, effectively allowing Benitez to cherry pick from the top of Champ/lower half of Prem.

Contrast that with Short/Bain, who upon relegation:

- Failed to sell any of the big-name wantaways Borini, Lens, Khazri, NDong, Djilibodji
- Didn't reinvest any of the big money we got for Pickford
- Dithered in getting rid of Moyes, failed to attract McKinness, delayed in appointing Grayson
- Wasted weeks trying to peddle the club to Germans
- Failed to significantly strengthen the playing squad, with Grayson restricted to the lower leagues & loan system.

Ashley effectively ran the club like a Premier League club in waiting, for one season. It was a gamble. It paid off.

Short ran the club like a League One club in waiting. Both owners got what their outlook deserved.

Aye, but the truth is the Mags are going down the route we went in the Premiership.

Look at that f***ing wage bill - what the fuck have they got to show for it?! Who could they peddle for money?? Might get a bit for Shelvey and Lascelles - who else?

They are a couple of bad managerial decisions from EXACTLY the position we found ourselves in - loads of shit, overpaid players that nobody wants. If Ashley pulls the plug - and you can bet your bottom dollar, he'd like to - what happens?

They're in the Prem now but as we show, it can take years to reap the consequences from horrific financial decisions. They have not done it the Burnley way - and I wouldn't get too complacent if I were them.

It's a miracle we can now move forward. Whatever else you say about Short, very few owners would take the consequences for his own decisions as personally as him. He has taken a massive hit - would Ashley, or anyone else, do the same?

They gambled, it worked, now being in the PL with the big money again, that will wipe out a lot of those losses. If only Short would have had a similar level of ambition this season...
will it fuck, they’ll continue to throw good money after bad while the debt mounts.

Seems to be a huge lack of understanding about operating profit and profit after tax in this thread.
