I'm not disagreeing that these turncoats exist but these turncoats aren't exclusive to Durham yet there's a special turncoat label reserved for Durham mags despite the fact the vast majority probably weren't living in Durham 20 years ago.

Have you resided in either of these places? Regardless of the answer (you appear to want to argue/disagree anyway), Durham is (and as my map has shown) will always be Sunderland. Washington is part of the City of Sunderland. So, unless you follow non-league football and support Gateshead (don't even go there for how the mags screwed them) or South Shields why you be a durham mag?

To be fair, he hasn’t had a season ticket that long! 82 was his first game. It was in the old second division I think!

My other brother supports Newcastle as well, though nowhere near as fervently. To be fair, he isn’t as well off as my eldest brother so can’t afford to go often.

I understand your point re. the historic geography of the region, but my brother would probably point out that his gaff is as close to SJP and Newcastle City Centre as it is to the SOL/RP and Sunderland City Centre. On that basis, and given he was born in Newcastle, I’d say supporting NUFC (which he has his entire life) was fair game.

My dad, a Washington lad and a lifelong red and white, is the one to be questioned!!!

Conversely, my nephew was born in Sunderland and supports Newcastle because of his dad. Plenty non-geordies at SJP on a match day I’d wager, including those ones that feel the need to pretend to sound a bit more geordie. ;)

Randy I can totally relate to that and probably better it - one of my grandas played for SAFC, I was brought up in Boldon/Washington, my eldest was born in RVI (supported Man U cos her family were from walker - didn't go to games but he thought it would keep the peace), my second was born in Sunderland but by then we'd moved back over the water and he was the only kid in school (North Shields) who didn't support the mags so he decided to be a mag, my 3rd always said she'd support SAFC. 10 years later and my 2 lads have had season cards at the SoL and love SAFC. Because their dad does and their granda does and their great granda did

I know the map thing is historic but you don't pick teams because they're doing well, yet it seems a lot of mags have - especially durham and washington mags otherwise they'd be SAFC.

I don’t doubt it, but I’m pretty certain that when our kid first went to watch the mags they were in division 2 and SAFC were division 1. What with that and being born in Newcastle, his reasons were entirely legitimate imo.
 
You can get on a train at Durham and be in the centre of Newcastle in 10 minutes. It's far more of a fuck on to get through to Sunderland due to poor transport links so I can understand why any matchgoing fan in Durham would go and watch them as it's far less hassle.

Not something that's ever bothered me particularly. We'll have fans spread across the region as well because people can support who they like.
