Onions Lancashire Squad Best I've Ever Played In

f***ing hell. Talk about a parting shot......

Onions, 35, ended a long association with Durham last year, shortly after becoming their all-time leading first-class wicket-taker, and signed a two-year deal with Division One runners-up Lancashire.

He has been joined at Old Trafford by opening batsman Keaton Jennings, another ex-Durham player with Test honours for England, to boost a group already boasting Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Haseeb Hameed.

Onions won the County Championship in 2008, 2009 and 2013 and thinks this current Red Rose squad has greater depth than any of those units did.

"The strength in this squad is by far the best I've played with, for the volume of players," he explained ahead of Lancashire's season-opening clash with Nottinghamshire on Friday.

"Durham, when they won the Championship for a couple of years, had 11 players that were unbelievable. Here, it's 24.

"There's a lot of players who will be disappointed if they're not playing on Friday.

"Individually, we've done a lot of good things, which is great. But we need to knit it together as a team and go out there on Friday and perform well.

"Individual performances will help, but they won't win trophies. You need to be there as a team."

Onions' deal with Lancashire includes an arrangement for him to be involved in the coaching set-up too, which he conceded helped sway him in accepting their contract over Durham's offer.

Yet, there is still a fire burning inside the bowler to achieve more as a player before he calls it a day.

"I'm 35 years old so I'm coming towards the end," Onions admitted.

"But one of my goals is that I want to win a trophy, ideally a championship, over the next couple of years. Then I can retire happy.

"It's great to win trophies, and when you finish your career you probably look back and think, 'This is what I've actually done'.

"I'm very stubborn, and I want to prove myself against the best all the time. For me, not playing international cricket (any more), that's first division cricket.

"I still feel I'm good enough to do that."

Blah blah blah. The Durham sides he won the Championship with would destroy that Lancashire side. He's history now, concentrate on the lads who are representing our great club.

I agree. The 2008 & 2009 teams were a real force to be reckoned with. We had all bases covered. This Lancashire side couldn't hold a candle to it - even if they win the Championship this year it won't change that fact.

The biggest difference in the squads is Harmy. He was motivated fit and superb in 2008.Standard County batsmen did not have a clue how to play him and where completely intimidated by him. Even if they had Anderson for a large chunk of the season they still have not got that big nasty quick.
There are also a lot more talking horses in this Lancs team. Durhams key players had been there done it and bought the T shirt.

He's been quite active on social media etc posting about the season - how much he is looking forward to it/excited to get going, how good the side is etc. Far more active than he ever was posting about a season for Durham - feels like its all an attempt to rub something in Durham's face.

Clearly not the most amicable break up - wasn't there a bitter social media post from him/his wife after it was announced?

Good luck to him and hope he does do well, but it's not the best side he's played in.

Meh. Lancs. is his team now and he has to talk on the positive side .... and look at what he's said, that they have a deep and large squad - I can't find much to complain there.

In 2013 under the first team who did we have? Coggers - probably mostly injured at that time. Harrison? Breese? Pringle? And Callum Thorpe was coming towards the end.

Not sure it's true about his activity. He's always been open like that - and he's going to talk about Lancs. now, they're his team, he should.

to be fair he has a right to feel slighted. i'm still pissed off how it all ended. he should still be here.

i have a feeling this wouldn't be happening if we hadn't offered a two year deal to rimmington that must've been a real kick in the teeth for him after all that was said.

Aye, bad start from the best squad Bunny has ever played with. Mind its early days. Might be 150 par pitch .

Absolutely no surprise whatsoever though that Jennings and Hameed failed while the eyes of the world was upon them. Massively overrated Hameed IMO, or atleast massively overhyped on the back of one decent season -same logic can be applied to Jennings.

Unless I’m something the clue is in the title, SQUAD. Not sure he means best starting 11 as we all know Durham had a superior team than the current Lancashire starting 11

His point still doesn't stand up. You can only have a fantastic squad if you have a fantastic first X1. Lancashires team , squad couldn't hold a candle to Durham's.

I agree - Many seem to have written Stoneman off for averaging 30 against Australia and NZ. They seem to ignore the fact that he has outscored everyone on the county circuit for the last 5 years and his nearest challengers are performing worse against weaker opponents.

Absolutely

I think the media have lost the plot, basically if you have to score a 100 just to be in the team, it doesnt matter if you get 50s 3 in a row, they don't count only 100s do.

Colly has been prepared to accept a 1 year rolling contract for the past 3 seasons, played in all formats and rarely missed any games. Why was that not good enough for Onions? He has a history of injury; why object to an further year being conditional on fitness? It's sad that he should part with bitterness.

as i said, i don't think there would have been the same animosity if we hadn't immediately gone out and given a two year contract to an australian the same age as bunny, that imo was poor from the club.

Hardly, Bunny had decided he wasn't staying and left, so we had to find someone to replace him - what did you expect the club to have done? Signed nobody and left the side without a new ball bowler?

bunny wanted a two year contract, we wouldn't give him one basically because of his age and offered him a one year deal, he went else where and we offered a two year deal to someone the same age. how is it difficult to understand how that would disappoint him [and i'd have thought alot of durham followers] :?:
