Wisden cricketers of the year

Why do we like cricket in the UK? Because we grew up with it, we played at school (maybe) and watched the summer tests on terrestrial tv

Why is it not watched in the USA? They don’t have inherently different taste, they just didn’t grow up with it. I find American football dull as shit as I didn’t watch it from the age of 7.

Women’s sport is exactly the same. It’s an exposure thing, both playing and watching.

your common sense approach will gain no traction here like

i agree entirely attendances are not important to me either, hence why i am not arguing women's cricket is irrelevant because it doesn't get the crowds in.

i did compare cricket to cricket earlier and you ignored this, when i said if we're talking about the top standard why not only show IPL, big bash etc and jack in all coverage of county cricket, by your argument you'd agree with this?

edit: or rather jack in all coverage of domestic t20 competitions

Well it wasn't intentional, so to address this - I don't have the viewing figures to hand or the exact listening figures, but county cricket gets millions of listeners - which was tweeted out by Marty somewhere so it gets covered because clearly there's a demand for it.

I'm uneasy however about the comparison between IPL and Red Ball, because to be honest, they are almost two different sports. The two are totally unrelated in terms of method and skill set in my opinion - it's like comparing Football to Futsal I feel, because although there are obvious similarities, there are also vast differences.

yes I realise the comparison was lazy which is why I edited it to say how about ditching domestic t20 competitions in favour of the ipl, since it is a higher standard. I assume you are a fan of the new t20 franchises as they will be a higher standard than the existing counties' t20 competition?

Women's Tennis and Women's Athletics are about the only ones in the mainstream that hold their own regarding relevance.

interesting fact about tennis, the top prizes for the best players of the world are lower than the prizes given out to professional computer game players.

how long before the BBC stop showing Wimbledon and replace it with frogger and the like

You would assume incorrectly as T20 cricket is not proper cricket you know.

Even though it’s played by international superstars to a very high standard.

To me the true standard of a cricket player and true talent is a cricket player who can adapt his game to all formats of the game a Kohli for example.

I agree a player who can play all forms well is very impressive.

I don't really enjoy t20 cricket especially not all the added 'razzzamatazz' that comes with it... and due to the differences in the formats and the way they're delivered I think it's ok to like one and not the other so much. I appreciate you get grief on here and I am as guilty as anyone of belittling t20 cricket, apologies for that.

At the end of the day I just don't see why we should ignore female sport stars just because they're not as good as the men. I can only imagine the people who feel this way don't have daughters, nieces etc who might like to have role models in fields they are interested, be that sports, sciences, business etc etc

Let's scrap the Paralympics anarl while we#'re at it eh?

My opinion for what it’s worth mate is that certain people don’t like change or that the game needs to evolve to bring new fans to both the mens game and to increase the popularity of the women’s game.

I know I am very much in the minority but I don’t understand the constant criticism of the ECB on here.

With the new franchise idea at least they trying to bring very needed new fans to the game.

I would rather them do that than be stuck in the dark ages where pompous men watch a long days cricket in stupid stripped suits with cucumber sandwiches where the cricket is slow and tedious.

careful now, you're stooping to our level. I'd rather see a wonderfully bowled and cautiously defended maiden over than 6 short balls whilst the batsman tries to smash the leather of it but usually ends up falling over or missing wildly [see two can play this game]

the problem I have is why does forward motion always have to seem a scrabble to gain new fans by pandering to people who don't like the game at the expense of alienating the current crop of fans, who already invest both emotionally and financially?

for example this country already has a domestic t20 competition with a pre existing fan base and infrastructure - why not invest in that rather than ludicrously run at the same time using the same players and stadia of some but not others? it is shameful. all those who love their county are being pushed aside in favour of fans who may or may not exist. 'they' will get to watch these brand new teams on television - something we who have been following our counties for years and decades generally don't or never have had the opportunity to do

Of course I see you point and tbh am not too concerned about the the current T20 or the franchise one,but am concerned about bringing new fans to the game.

The bottom line is the game needs new fans it really does fior the longevity of the game, so whatever method achieves that has got to be considered.

Change will always put a few noses of of joint but the bigger picture is cricket needs new fans and T20 whehter in county or franchise format needs to be invested in imo.

I see your point about the defended maiden have played cricket all my life soo can see where you coming from however that’s not imo what will
bring new people to the game.

Hang on, I’ve just realised what happened.

They got the awards for making really good tea! Obviously! That’s all they can do after all

wisden cricket tea ladies of the year :lol:

on your last point first no probably not but perhaps it will be what keeps people in the game? I got into cricket fairly late in life and it was a t20 world cup on at the time when I first started really watching it other than taking half an interest in dccc when it was being set up around the time I left durham as a bairn [but never went to a match or owt] but now I find it fairly drab to watch. the idea of following a competition like the ipl where teams are just invented, players change teams year year, it leaves us in acold sweat. how can anyone take an interest in that?

although everyone takes their interest in a different way. from the way you speak you love the sport but don't really care about the teams, just happy to watch whether it's dccc, north east untied or Yorkshire terriers or whatever. for me I'm less interested in the sport than I am the team I follow. whilst I'd happily watch [tv or live or listen] to durham cc I could probably enjoy a day at the cricket watching another team, as long as I was with marras or on the beers with a good book etc but watching it on telly or listening on wireless? not so much

the rest yes I totally agree but again, why put those noses out of joint by creating this new franchise system instead of upgrading the existing one. it's gambling with the future of the sport rather than investing in it

Its not, its a standard thing

The standard is really bad, the same standard of local sides up here

Nothing to do with exposure.

It’s really not. If something receives no tv coverage or press, it won’t be followed

Lords was full for the World Cup final. That’s great news

Eh? On about the cricketers of the year, they are nowhere near the level of male players who missed out, that is all that is important.

If you want to do a women's version its fine.

It’s called cricketers of the year, not male cricketers

And they are, in their version of the sport

Just as Joe Buttler could win it for blasting 100 in a T20, but he isn’t in the same class as Joe Root in tests.

Nah not for me, they'd struggle to beat some northern premier league sides.

Maybe yeah. But they play a different game.

Cricket is a whole bunch of other games.

Should we have a female sports personality of the year award because Mo Farah can run faster? Should we have a 10,000m sports personality because Mo Farah is shit at the high jump or at basketball?

Regarding your first point about the IPL it doesn’t seem to bother the thousands watching about some players changing teams.

Just like probably would not bother Sunderland fans if we signed 8 new players in fact quite the opposite they would be delighted!

I enjoy the IPL ,I have always enjoyed watching attacking cricket and was brought up watching club cricket where my club had a particular good cup side who played 20 over cup tie cricket on a night over 30 years ago

So I really don’t see it as that of a new thing and imo fans have always preferred to watch big hitters like Botham etc.

Test cricket got better imo when the likes of Gilchrist played attacking cricket.

As much as I agree with you about all the add on rubbish that comes with. T20 like nicknames dancing girls etc, if you strip all that out you have highly talented international cricketers playing exceptional entertaining cricket some of the close games already this season have been exceptional games to watch.

Yeah that’s a fair point I have no real interest in Durham prefer international or club cricket to them.

And I do agree if the T20 was revamped using the current counties have no issue what that if it brings new fans to the game as that’s the most important thing for me.

Well maybe, I really don'tthink I am being sexist, maybe I am I dunno, but I am only interested in people who are the best at the game in the world, men or female, its the same game, same rules.

you are totally entitled to only be interested in the men's games like nobody is forcing anyone to pay the slightest interest in woman's sports.

but there are women out there who do, why do people begrudge the slightest bit of attention being paid to the female sportsters?

aye i get that, i just don't feel the same way. i can't generate passion watching sport as a neutral to be honest, i struggle if i don't really care one way or another who wins.

It does help me that I do the fanssty league with my mate and have had a few bets on as well!
