SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

I quite enjoyed that final and am pleased Isner has finally won a big event. It's strange not seeing the usual suspects winning these titles.

Clay next.

Aye, a different set of players come to prominence for the next 3 months or so.

I just hope if he's fit, Nadal doesn't simply clean up on clay. The Spanish players will generally do well and Thiem could do with a few good runs. I always do like the Monte Carlo event.

Thiem is the obvious player other than Nadal on clay. beyond that, not really sure. Del Potro is good on all surfaces and there are players like Fognini and Carreno Busta who should do well. It could suit Djokovic to a degree also.

Think Isner could be a threat at Wimbledon. He really could do with taking form overseas, all his big wins seem to be in America.

Surprises me that it's the slam he's done least well in. Given that players like Querrey and Anderson have had some success in slams recently, there's no real reason why Isner shouldn't. I'd prefer youngsters to come through though.

Decent (rare) win for Naomi Broady yesterday in Monterrey, although Watson suffered a 7th straight defeat, in Charleston. Konta has her 2nd round Charleston match on BT Sport around 9 ish tonight.

Another solid win for Jay Clarke as well in a challenger.

Saw the end of the Watson match yesterday, not sure how she managed to lose it, she was ahead in the second set.

Didn't see any of it. I had recorded it, but when I saw the score I didn't bother. From what I heard, it was a terrible game and both were poor. Very concerning run of form for her though. Townsend isn't very good and Katie Boulter has beat her twice already in 2018.

Konta just about to start her match next, slightly later as all 3 games on that court that proceeded it went into deciding sets. She should win, but clay isn't a very good surface for her.

Just had the wrong BT channel on there, was watching it rain in the WTA Monterrey Open, turned it over and Konta’s dropped the first set, never seen her opponent before.

Just 19 years old, mainly on the ITF scene but has had a few main draw matches and Jo beat her at Fed Cup earlier this year. She's played doubles with Laura Robson in a few recent ITF events.

I can see her getting a few decent commercial deals if she has reasonable playing success.

Konta was pretty bad that first set mind.

You worded that well.

Well played (and deserved) Stollar, but my god, that was so bad from Jo. Can't see many points at all during the clay season and her ranking will drop like a stone if she has a poor grass season as she is defending a F at Nottingham, SF at Eastbourne and SF at Wimbledon - haven't seen the points, but she could genuinely be heading towards #100 after that as she has basically been shite since Wimbledon.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Gabriella Taylor was British number 1 by the end of the season as Watson has equally been as bad of late.

Yeah, shame for Konta when the top of the women’s game is wide open.

Think those days are long gone unfortunately. It was a meteoric rise and was a huge surprise when she burst on the scene, granted she had 2/3 great years, but her record since Wimbledon is awful - 10W 14L and she has never managed more than 2 wins in any tournaments since Wimbledon - that's more than a blip, that's constant poor form over 9 months and she could soon be looking for a 4th coach in just over 2 years. Pretty much every draw she has now seems a tough match on paper. Stollar is 19 and ranked outside the top 200, but was just 3/1 here and it doesn't really feel like a hue surprise.

Why is this thread not 43 pages of sexy Tennis lasses?

Because it's good discussion of one of the best sports there is pal.

Anar, you're all good lads. Sorry to intrude. I just wanted to see some tennis fanny.

FYI, Topspin 2 on the xbox360 was the best sports game ever created.
