SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

Even if you judge it by 04-07 standards this draw is an absolute cake walk for Federer. Beatdown of an injured Rafa in the final probably.

Djokovic didn't look remotely fit the only time I saw him when he was playing Monfils so no major surpsise that he lost. Great for Chung though, deserves a result like that. Thiem's result is pretty embarrassing, he shouldn't be losing that match even if they play it 100 times.

Wow Tennys Sandgren. Wasn't 3 months ago since I was watching him on a stream losing 3 challenger events in a row to Cameron Norrie and now in a slam quarter final. He's had a pretty decent run up until today, including the injured Stan and fellow challenger circuit Marterer but that's a great win today and his career will change - he'll probably get DE into most bigger events now like IW and Miami rather than relying on the odd reciprocal wildcard so his career should change rather than slugging it out in the US challengers. Thiem has struggled in earlier rounds as he often does outside of clay.

The Kerber match was brilliant. I wanted her to win but the Taiwan women was superb (as she has been for most of the tournament) and thoroughly deserved the first set and was a game away from another shock but fell away in the third - the Kerber-Keys QF has become a lot closer now given how they both played today.

Just watching the evening session now although I know Djok dropped the opening set as it told me whilst watching the Thiem match - that's one thing I don't like, obviously not many are as sad as me who will match multiple matches each day  and most will prioritise a match or two, but it's awful when you are half way through a match on your laptop and out of the blue it will say 'xyz is through...' on the telly.

rafa isn't injured. Hasn't even got the knees taped which is usually a sign when he's struggling.

From what I've seen of him in the Schwartzman and Mayer matches I don't think he's near 100% really. He's played three pushers that he can stay on top of for most of the game (even Schwartzman had a good spell where he bullied him around the court) and had a relatively tight match against Leo Mayer but obviously he's far better on the big points.

Be surprised if he has it all his own way against Cilic. Certainly wouldn't touch him at them odds.

Schedule is different from last year as they have added a doubles match on first at 12am. Probably good for me as I'll get a rare early night. Back at work tomorrow so not sure whether to watch it in the background there or try to avoid results and watch when I get in. With Edmond playing I might get the spoiler.

Dimitrov v Edmund
From 8am
Nadal v Cilic
Suarez Navarro v Wozniacki

It's odd re: the doubles. Across all courts, there are two men's doubles matches on and they're on opposite sides of the draw (the number 1 seeds are on Margaret Court Arena at 2am). Bryan and Bryan are obvious choices as a crowd pleaser as they're arguably the greatest men's doubles pair ever. However, I'm guessing that this is largely so a pair of little known wildcards are also on Rod Laver tomorrow - Sam Groth and his not at all a hero to the Aussie crowds partner, Lleyton Hewitt, on his doubles comeback.

For the singles, expecting Svitolina to win, hoping for Edmund then both Nadal and Wozza. I still think Wozza could be on for her long overdue first Slam win.

Crazy how that bottom half has just fallen away these past few days, looked by far the stronger half but not any more

Sandgren vs Chung
Berdych v Federer

Could have been

Thiem vs Djokovic (or Zverev)
Delpo vs Federer

Berdych and Chung though have stepped up and played very well and put out 3 big names between them.

Brilliant! Go on Kyle lad! Chuffed for him.

Was just typing when your post came up. Been an interesting night so far with Svitolina out in straight sets and Edmund two-one up now. May those be the only upsets today, please.

It's all set up to be a great day for everyone in the thread now if Wozniacki can do the business!
