How long can Rafa last?

Ashley and his cronies came up with and stuck to the transfer policy. And while Ashley wasn't scouting the players, he absolutely was directing the purchases and sales. Hence not spending a little bit more to get Modric, or Aubameyang, or Gameiro, and stockpiling cheap attacking midfielders because that's where the margins are biggest. Carr returned with lists of players, and inevitably the manager of the time was lumbered with whomever was cheapest. Like Riviere and not Lacazette.

If you can't see that, it's pointless chatting.

btw, I'm expecting hoots of derision because of the names I've mentioned, but as always these players were on our RADAR before they were famous but Ashley either pulled out of the deal, or never pursued it because of the price.

This is the problem though, most clubs buy players to improve their lot on the pitch, but should some bigger club come sniffing around, they accept they have to sell.

Ashley's strategy was to buy players <26yrs old, from cheaper markets, in the hope that bigger clubs would come sniffing around. Regardless of the needs on the pitch. It's really that simple.

You asked when Ashley had sold a player and not replaced him?
Modric, Lacazette and Aubameyang :lol: what a fuckin deluded knacker :lol:

I've never said we should be rubbing shoulders with the top 6. That's just you making stuff up.

Would Lacazette come to Newcastle now? No, of course not, neither would Aubameyang, or Modric, obviously. At the time we were interested Lacazette wasn't the star he is now. I really wonder if there's an issue on this board with understanding how time works...

Well, he's not risking his fortune, because it's money made by the football side of the business (players sales, PL Money), and , if he doesn't spend a bit, we're at risk of going down, again. Should we go down again he'll wipe tens of millions off our value and miss out on >£100m tv money

We've had some narrow losses, and the football is pragmatic, at best, but we've also been unfortunate at times during a match and with the availability of key players. And all of the performances come with the caveat that Benitez didn't get to spend what he was promised.
At exactly what stage of their careers would Modric and Lacazette have considered Newcastle? Lacazette has always been highly valued as has Modric. If you believe big Sam when he said he was close to signing when he was manager of Newcastle tha's got dandruff where ya brain should be.

Speaking of our resident mags, where have they all disappeared to ? All bar Mr Fish are awol. They must all have got jobs or waiting until the result of their game tomorrow perhaps

They'll have all gone off to join in the celebrations, on the Mag boards, after their leader said they'd beat Everton and complete the takeover.

Why can't you see that he's brought people in to replace those that were sold? That's not investing in the squad, it's barely maintenance. It may look like a lot of money but that's football inflation. Relatively speaking these purchases were quite modest.
It's not like he (fma)sold Sissoko and didn t allow replacements. Just accept that net spend is bollocks. Hes spent almost 100m in his time at Nufc. Accept that fhs .

When Jamal Lascelles ends up being your most important man, you know you've got serious problems:oops:

Here's the thing mate, I've posed this question to Mags I know in real life.

The club sells Sissoko, who wanted away, for £30 million.

Who can they then buy for £30 million who they'd attract for the same wages Sissoko was on?

Are Newcastle in a position to attract players in the £30 million bracket?

Are any of the SMB Mags able to answer?

If you lot were an ex, injunctions would be taken out!

There have been other Rafa threads on here that got to something like 300 pages. As a Sunderland fan it's totally embarrassing to see us staring league 1 in the face and the most popular threads on here are about Newcastle but it's no surprise really.

When the mags say the Keegan days and the Sir Bobby days destroyed some of our fans they are right and that's such a shame because everyone knows Sunlun has always been NE top dog marra

If Benitez spends a shit ton in January, but we still go down, it's his fault (and the players).
If we don't spend in January and go down the fault has to lie with Ashley.
So if Huddersfield, Brighton, Burnley, Watford go down, will the fans be calling for the chairman to resign or the manager? Or perhaps neither.

When teams spend 80m and get relegated, normally you cut costs and the manager has to deal with a small budget and the sale of key players. We sold about 40m pounds worth of players, and Grayson got 1.5m of it back for transfers. Newcastle sold 3 players for about 75m between them, and Rafa got a great big fat chunk of that back to spend, essentially purchasing the title.

Huddersfield and Brighton - what was their budget last season, and this season? A hell of a lot smaller than yours, as was (and is) Burnley's, and they're 6th. Burnley's summer signings amount to Charlie Taylor, Jack Cork and Chris Wood as the only signings they made that cost more than about 2m - and Wood on his own cost almost as much as the other 2 put together, he was their 1 really expensive buy.

For comparison, if you want to complain about not previously signing Lacazette or Aubameyang at younger ages because Ashley tapdanced over spending, you signed Jacob Murphy for 12m (?) this summer (who has been in and out of your team), whilst Richarlison went to Watford for 10m...the value is out there, as long you have a manager who sees past the end of his nose.

No we haven’t, and you as a mag know that. Truth of the matter is, we know and accept that fact. You lot are deluded and think it is your divine right

Are any of those clubs as "big " as either Sunderland or Newcastle?

In the medium to long term, do you not think you should be competing above that lot listed above?

So start your own Sunderland thread.

....... Newcastle
