When Newcastle nearly won the League

Graham Fenton the mag, helping to cause Keegan's meltdoon.
what a night that was

brilliant

the arrogance of them at the time was on another level

The whole thing has been airbrushed by the Mags as usual.

What actually happened is that Newcastle attempted to buy the title as Jack Walker did with Blackburn a couple of years before .

The profile was virtually identical .... high profile ex-Liverpool title winner, massive spend and a short term policy.

Keegan could've pulled it off but Man Utd easily did the double over them and toppled the fragile house of cards.

It wasn't just mind games with Ferguson .... Keegan lost the games against the eventual champions home and away.

Even the idea that Newcastle threw caution to the wind and outscored everyone is fake .... they only scored 2 more than Everton in 6th.

Liverpool, who finished 3rd, lost less games.

What was the feeling amongst SAFC supporters?

This message board and Social Media wouldn't have been around so there wouldn't have been many Mags kicking about bragging and being unbearable unless you actually physically spoke to them.

I think if it were to happen these days it would be utterly unbearable.

That season 95-96 was awesome.
We won the league and got promoted under Reidy, whilst they for 2/3 of the season looked a shoe in for the title.
Their implosion was marvellous. Tried to buy the title and failed - thankfully.

There was only going to be one winner after Cantona silenced SJP with his winner.
What a game that was.
Mags battered Man U all first half. Schmeicel was unbelievable.
Then King Cantona struck and his awesome howl at the moon:lol:.
Everyone suspected that after that night they wud bottle it.

Quite a few threads about Newcastle at the minute, you lot trying to distract yourselves from what's going on at Sunderland?

He knew his football but more importantly he also knew people.

Man management and also mind games he was an expert at. He had Keegan round his little finger when the mags should have won the title.

They didn't though as we all know

Aye, spot on, Alex quite often subtly influenced other managers' team selections & set ups for his own benefits. The Keegan one was a classic, and you could see from Keegan's "love it, just love it" if we won the league press TV interview just how far Alex had got to him - and succeeded!

Don't think anybody does really, he was the master of football phsycology, a very clever man. By tapping his watch on the sidelines, he used to get into the heads of opponents and referees, thus giving Manchester United a psychological advantage.

He had so many ways of getting what he wanted, he apparently did similar things at Aberdeen during their successful years. I sometimes thought the way he looked at referees & opponents was worth a goal

Dunno about easy like Riv. They battered Man U at Sid James from what I remember. Thank god for Schmichael and Cantona.

They might have battered Man U, but it's the score that counts and Alex's team selection & tactics produced the goods again? Which allowed him to get further into Keegan's head.....

Which made it so pleasurable when "their title" became a 2nd prize

Brilliant memories from that glorious spring in '96. Collymore breaking their hearts, Keegan's meltdown, us getting promoted without kicking a bal,l and the TV camera focused on me in the Clock Stand paddock when they announced the attendance the next day at our home game v Stoke. We ran out to the Z-Cars theme that day.

Didn’t the Man Utd fans have a banner about catching them during the FA Cup replay at Roker Park ?

from their point of view they will think at least they had a go, and a good few years as a strong team.

Will always be a sickener though deep down- im still gutted about our relegation under smith in 91, as im convinced we would have done ok the season after when the premier money came in.
Im still gutted Reidy knocked Europe back twice the stubborn moron, and that we never pushed on them two seasons or under bruce when we sold bent and plummeted.

and after allardyce!

As a sunderland fan growing up then in north Tyneside it went from late 80s/early 90s both teams on a par/shite/no money, not that many fans, and general interest in newcastles team was lukewarm

as soon as they got keegan in, stayed up then started spending crazy money the amount of new fans/gloating/self satisfied gloating was pure torture

especially as we were enduring cunnington/ buxton/butcher/ian rogerson then bob 'coconuts not peanuts' transfer spree that all got wiped out driving the wrong way around a roundabout!

and the 'WHOSE NEXT' season ticket advert with the photos of cunnington etc then a mystery man with a question mark in it.

When we moved to the sol I thought it would always be as good as that/would be established like everton or someone, but we have made so many shite choices.
