Electricity Bill Hike

Is that your usage or your monthly direct debit? Our usage is about £100 per month for dual fuel with British Gas but they've set the direct debit at £243 per month "in order to cover the increase usage in winter". I'm going to wait and see how it pans out but right now we're about £800 in credit!

there is a cock up somewhere along the line with that. have they refunded your £800. Id give them a call to see if they can justify. are they using actual readings. are you on a special rate that ended and been put onto standard tariff

Can’t remember which supplier it was but they were going to put my direct debit up by about £40 a month a few years ago.
£20 would’ve covered no bother, they just take the piss they must have millions of people overpaying by substantial amounts.

Don’t let this duel thing discount fool you as well, get them separate, they may knock some money off but it doesn’t cover the savings on the best single deals.

I’m on £80 a month with ovo via smart meters but I would say my bills are about £130 a month in the winter but it works itself out over the year. I’m in credit by £200 so far this year

Just had my half yearly electricity bill in and it`s jumped from £88 a month to bloody £146 a month. That`s from meter readings too not estimates.

That`s for over the summer period too. We haven`t been using our electricity any more than usual. That`s a pretty hefty hike.

has anyone else seen rises like this? Is £146 excessive or reasonable for a bog standard house.

Maybe it`s time I switched provider. Any suggestions??

Just have a look through U switch. It's a painless process.

Our quarterly bills are based on our smart meter readings but the DD amount was set before we got the SM in and we had just moved into this house. Prior to our moving in on Dec 1 last year the house had been empty for a couple of months and it was as cold as a crypt, so we put the heating on full blast for three days prior to us moving in. Also we had the gas fire (artificial coal fire type) running all Xmas Day and Boxing Day. When our first meter readings were taken the gas consumption had naturally been massive due to that initial high usage and of course the fact that it was midwinter. So British Gas had a skewed view of our realistic normal usage which is why the DD is so high. I'm not worried about it as I presume at the end of the first year they will review the DD and refund us any credit. I'm not going to get into a world of callcentre hassle trying to get a refund now, when in a couple of months it should happen naturally. If it doesn't, then I'll get into the hassle.

Fuck me, how much now?

I pay 45 quid a month for gas and electric combined!

I had a running battle with British gas over this when I was living by myself as half the year the house was empty and half I'd be home. They'd monitor my usage and try and change my bills down to say a tenner when I was away, and then when I was home trying and stick it up to like 80. This went on for about a year. I was like stop f***ing about and let me keep it in the middle. In the end I left over it.

Ours was about £120 when we had an old Victorian house, heating cost a fortune. In a shitty little ex council house now and we pay less than £70.

Your usage must have gone up a lot. Maybe your wife has been using the battery charger a lot?

£376.51 a year for your electricity usage of
3035.1kWh.
£467.49 a year for your gas usage of
17932kWh

£70 per month. It's due to go up a bit though as that deal ended.

Get smart meters installed saves all the mess on with estimated bills. I have them and the home hub so I know what's getting used and is great to see what uses massive amounts of power like your kettle and tumble dryer. And even down to turning tv's off at the wall. It all mounts up

Kettle uses next to no energy typically. That's how those meters can be misleading.

That's because it is not in use most of the time. But when it is in use it uses a hell of a lot. As do electric fires and ovens. Microwaves are much more efficient as they heat the food directly, and don't waste energy heating the oven itself and also a constant stream of air getting heated up and vented from the oven.

Edit: our lass has just put the kettle on and the smart meter is reading 40p per hour.

They're about 2kw usually iirc. So closer to half that price, regardless though, they're on for about a minute at a time.

It costs about half a penny to boil the kettle.

Any reason? I'm only paying £33pm for gas and electric
You either don't use much or you're building up a debt.
