When are people going to realise that there will be no oil left in 2040. This has nothing to do with air pollution it's just trying to get people used to the idea of not driving brum brums without facing up to the real reason

...and that was a party political broadcast on behalf of the Green Party.

There is not one cat in hell's chance of that being even remotely true.

There are currently 1.2 billion cars in the world, by 2035 it's estimated there will be 2 billion. There are 39,000 aircraft in the world, this will double in the next 15 years. Do you honestly believe that all of that can keep chugging away on petrol/ diesel/ aviation fuel for the next 25 years without totally depleting the limited reserves there are? This obviously not taking into account all of the other huge number of processes that use oil.

Clockwork cars is the answer, and there are four wheels which could have key type devices on the end of shafts to wind the mechanism up......get this........as you're driving.

*Patent pending*

How do we know how much fossil fuel is left when we don't know how much we had to start with?

f***ing bollock corporation fear mongering at its best.....

Only solution IMO is one car per household , almost becoming the norm to have 2-3 cars per house now , something has to give and electric cars aren't the answer

Well I could ask the wife to take me to work, drive home, then if she needs it during the day she has it available for some of the kids evening activities, before picking me up again. That would double the family miles though.

The modern world is that it is common for both people to work and common for both to work at different places. Due to increasing house prices and student debt, young people are living at home well into their 20s and working elsewhere too. The days of the woman doing a daily stop down the highstreet and father & son walking together to the pit at the end of the street to work, are long gone.

At my house, in this good weather I often cycle while the wife & kids walk or cycle to school, so it is not unusual for both cars to sit for a couple of days unused. That is a zero environmental impact. Today both are being used.

I can't see your proposed restriction being workable in any way, or having that much of an impact.

I think the uberisation/on-demand culture we're moving to will see this start to happen.

The Mrs (No) drives every day but I often don't need a car, and factoring in tax, insurance, repairs, will soon be cheaper just to hire one when I require it. If on-demand takes off will seriously consider about going down to one car.

By 2035 maybe there'll be 2 billion cars, but many won't be using petrol or diesel. Reliance on oil will decline, alternative fuels will likely become popular, and of course electricity.
We're not running out of oil, the Middle East might be, though. Once their reserves are used then they lose their hold over the West. The UK can start dipping in to our reserves near the Falklands.
