What on earth were people expecting?
Not that we will but if we now go out and buy Chris Wood and Benik Afobe as Vaughan has been signed as third choice is it still confirmation that the club was only targeting mid table?

I think that's the cause of some peoples anxiety. At least as a premier league club there was an expectation that we'd spend some money, even last summer Moyes was allowed to spend £30m or so.

This time it's still pretty much guess work what we may or may not have to spend. The glass half empty types will have us being restricted to a summer of free signings, loans and a couple of players bought for rock bottom prices, while the optimists will cling onto the hope that we are keeping our powder dry until Grayson fully assesses the squad before bringing in a few decent players.

Only time will tell but all the players we've been linked with so far would appear to indicate the former rather than latter school of thought may be closer to the truth.

Better than what we've got at the minute, so I'll be happy, as long as there are others in the pipeline. Oh and I believe Grayson knows more than most of us on here as to what's needed to approach this division this year, so another positive.

Sunderland have made a bid of £900,000 for Bury striker James Vaughan.

Before you write him off, he has a very good record in a league 1 below the one we find ourselves in.

Bain will tell how hard he has worked on this deal behind the scences and what perfect fit he is for the club.

The tan is template of hard work and thirfty business

Jamesy Vaughan, Jamesy Vaughan.

Jamesy Jamesy Vaughan.

I think I love him more than porn.

Jamesy Jamesy Vaughan.
Not bad mara, not bad at all.

And will be a massive confidence boost for the lad thinking we love him more than one of the best things in the world....ever!

Feels really desperate this mind. Someone playing in the 3rd tier, albeit had a good season lat time, but a bang average Championship record and will be 29 by the time he comes here and people are genuinely happy about this? Gotta be some undercover mags on this thread. Yes we are in a poor position financially, but nobody can tell me the likes of Sheff Wed, Wolves, Villa, Boro fans etc will be looking at this and (genuinely) say 'Wow, that's a cracking signing for them' - it's the type of signing I'd expect Barnsley or Millwall to pull off, not one hoping to be going straight back up. Even Joe Garner who has gone to Ipswich for the same price would have been better IMO, and if i was an Ipswich fan signing Vaughan then I'd be disappointed.

I know of the financial restrictions, but a similar size club like Sheff Wed signing Rhodes who is completely proven at this level and we sign someone older who is basically a journeyman. Would far rather have loaned someone like Abraham (not necessarily him as he will have better options, but someone in a similar position to him when Bristol loaned him) or Gallagher from the league above. Hell, even Adam Armstrong.

Hopefully this will prove to be 3rd or 4th choice and if it is i won't have a problem, but if we are lining up with Vaughan leading the line then it's going to be a long, depressing season I'd imagine.
We literally have NO senior strikers. NONE. We need to buy at least three senior strikers, so buying someone for around £1m who got 24 goals in the divison below ours last season is a good idea because, again, we have ZERO senior strikers.

Ex Everton and a total crock. Ideal for Sunderland
Played 37 games last season and scored a lot. Type of striker that often hits their peak late and known to Grayson. Could be a really astute signing especially if one of three or four strikers. Him and Maja could be very decent cover for a really good centre forward. Not exciting but fairly pragmatic. In an ideal world we'd push the boat out for someone like Afobe but that could well be beyond us presently.

Low risk signing as long as we sign 2 others

We have an average f***ing manager who is happy to work with a budget that would not feed a budgie and some people on here think promotion is a likelihood when relegation is more likely Short has truly fucked us over.
massively concerned. We're a shambles

Happy enough IF we bring another couple of strikers in. Whether that happens remains to be seen
