They were decent results, likewise 2 points from us, Villa & Norwich were a pathetic return.

Most financially well run clubs can afford to reinvest what they bring in. Just so happens we also managed get the right players out and in as well as making a profit

The Fish has just said himself Rafa is using the media to get more money. Youve just said it's not happening.

There's a mag poster on here (might be fish again) saying yous needed to spend 55 mill in the championship because you didn't even have a side good enough for the championship after losing your best players. You say none of the player who left were the best ones

Are you saying there was no German consortium interested at all? So the club announced we were in talks with a takeover and postponed the appointment of a manager until talks were complete one way or another because we weren't in any talks with a consortium

I think spending what you have available without risking financial future is the course of action of the majority of managers.

I think if you needed to build a squad that could challenge for the automatic spots when it was missing;

any right back
experienced CB
Depth at LB
Depth at CM
any right winger
any left winger
depth at AM
depth and experience at CF

It would cost you a lot of money, or a lot of time. Newcastle had the money and didn't need to spend the time.

Compare the squad that remained after departures this time round, to the squad Hughton had last time round.

hah I didn't note that tbh, I just got annoyed with the 'mags at work' who go on as if we sneaked it by goals scored or something

to my mind, if we had needed to beat Watford we would have (we played the reserves v them drew 2-2 and had 2 goals unfairly ruled out too) we would have, and also if Newcastle had needed to beat spurs it would have been av different game

I was pissed off with allardyce for not playing full strength even though we couldn't finish any higher, not like they had to wait long till their hols!

re your allardyce point if he had taken us down idve wanted him to stay as we had good form from the January consistently and just needed 2-3 new good starting signings for a solid team (plus retaining m'viulla aND YEDLIN)

I'm not sure that Villa did raise their game in any of the matches you've described. They just weren't scared of you, like far too many last season were. But again, don't let the truth cloud your judgement.

It's an advantage, but it's not the panacea that some Sunderland fans suggest. Villa spent more and came nowhere near promotion. A large gross spend affords the manager the freedom to get the players that he wants, rather than a player 3rd or 4th on his list. That's important when you're going for promotion immediately.

If Grayson is given all the monies recouped from the sales of Pickford, Kone, Borini etc. wouldn't you expect him to spend that to give you the best chance of returning to the top flight immediately? Would a spend of £40-50m diminish the size of the task ahead of Grayson to such an extent that you'll dismiss it as an accomplishment at all?

By the by, they're writing books about Benitez because there's a market for them and it's a story that will sell.

Correct. If you must spend 55 million to get promoted from the championship and can afford to do it then do so.

But don't throw a hissy fit because Ashley isn't splashing the cash before the window has even officially opened

Simarly , if you only need to spend 5 million to get promoted then do that. It's all relative

Well, given I've watched more Newcastle games than you and yet can still be objective I'll stick with my assessment over yours :lol:

If Grayson spends 40-50 million I'd be dubious about how he would cope in the prem, yes. If we used all our incoming money on players and didn't pay off any of our debt then we won't have learned anything and I'd be worried about the future of the club
