Is it only worth playing in open play?
I played mostly in Solo until I had enough money and experience to try Open.

The worst thing about Open is the griefers - groups of twats who take pleasure in ganging up on newbies and destroying their ships for no reason other to be arseholes. When confronted by them the best bet is to do a bit of combat logging. It may be frowned upon by the ED community but I think its totally justified at times like that.

What's combat logging mate? Also can you transfer your money from solo play to open and vice versa?

Yes you can transfer money between the 2. Often when going for a Community Goal I'll drop into Solo mode as thats where the griefers tend to concentrate as there are lots of human players flying to the same system.

Combat logging is basically logging out of Open in mid fight. To the people attacking you your ship simply vanishes from the game. You then log back in to Solo and go somewhere safe to lick your wounds. Its considered cheating but when you've spent a long time grinding your way to the ship of your dreams and are minding your own business only to be jumped without warning by 4 dweebs in tooled-up FDL's who have no interest in your cargo, just destroying you for 'fun' then I suggest its perfectly fine.

Can you talk me through step by step mate?

If you save your game at spacestation in solo, do you start from the same spacestation in open play?

So you're in open play, someone attacks you, do you just select exit? Then you restartin solo play but wherever you save in solo, you will essentially start from in open?

Wherever you are in Open if you log out then log straight back in to Solo you will be in the same place with the same ship and the same damage/money/cargo.

Open and Solo universes are hosted on different servers but all of your Commander data goes with you when you switch between them. I think of it as switching between 2 different realities; one has human players and one doesn't.

The fastest way to combat log is to simply hold down the power button and switch your PC off. Bit of a drag but when you get jumped out of the blue its easier to do that than try to concentrate on the key combinations needed to log out cleanly whilst in mid-panic. :)

Thanks mate I'm playing on the xbox.

One of the best uses for switching between Open and Solo is when trying to take ranking missions. You may find a station that offers 2 or 3 ranking missions. Rather than do those and then fly back to the station you can switch repeatedly between O&S and the missions on offer refresh each time you log back in. You can then max out on loads of missions and do them all in one trip.

On the Xbox I think you hold down the Xbox button for a few seconds and it will ask you if you want to switch off the console.

Probs best to test it out before I'm hunted down by a pack of wolves

Back before they nerfed the game to stop people doing this the easiest way to rack up millions was to do the Robigo run. Take an AspX or Python to Robigo and dock. Switch between O&S and load up with slave smuggling missions. Take the slaves back to the bubble and don't give a shit about being scanned because you only got a fine and the fines were negligible compared to the payout for the slaves. Now, after nerfing, you have to avoid being scanned or you lose the contract and you're stuck with a hold full of illegal slaves.

I pity you newcomers! :(

This worth getting on PC like? Or shall I opt for Star Citizen?
Depends on the PC. I was running an i5, GTX 660 rig with 8GB RAM and it struggled to run ED and occasionally crashed when in a station or on a planetary surface. Hence upgrading my rig.

Don't you actually need to spend real money to upgrade/purchase ships in SC? I wouldn't get it for that reason alone.

That's what I read. People spending circa £12k of real money on a spaceship in a game

Whatever makes you happy I suppose.

$94M in crowdfunding and its still in alpha. Pffft!

Meanwhile ED costs £40 for an entire season of upgrades and its in full swing.

It does look amazing but having to pay add-ons to really progress in the game just makes a mockery of paying for a game in the first place. How could you possibly complete with someone who was spending circa $30k on upgrades etc.? Fair enough, it's about money and recouping their investment but it just makes it unaffordable to people who don't have that sort of disposable income.

I suppose it's not just having the disposable income, it's more about being able to justify the spend. I can just imagine the reaction I'd get if I told the Mrs I'd spent £20k on a virtual spaceship

"What are your thoughts on us remortgaging the house so I can upgrade my spacey love?"

And her reaction when you get toasted by someone who spent £25k.

Apparently when Star Citizen is actually released they're scrapping those costs for massive ships, and making it so you can earn that money in game. Or so I've read.

What's the graphics like on Elite Dangerous. Something tells me I won't struggle to run it on Ultra

Graphics are decent on the xbox. Star Citizen looks a lot better graphics wise though.
