Just booked a ticket on Southern London - Brighton service to get to Gatwick.

Book London - Brighton and get off at Gatwick £5.

Book London - Gatwick on the same train £20.
Is that an advance ticket?

Aye. Back end of May.

Living in Portsmouth we have a choice of two trains from London. SWT from Waterloo is a standard £37ish fixed fare whenever you travel. Southern from Victoria can be owt between £5 and £30ish to the same destination. Bizarre really.
Was just asking a lad at work about the getting off at Gatwick on the London to Brighton train. He said if you booked journey from A to B and got off in between you would be liable for an extra charge.

Is there a significant difference in the time it takes between them? e.g. does Southern take longer and stop in more places en route? We've got trains from Cambridge to both Kings Cross and Liverpool Street with different companies (and the Liv St journey is a lot slower) but the ticket price is the same in both cases.

I could buy an advance £2 ticket from Three Bridges to Gatwick, pick it up from the ticket machine and use that to get out at Gatwick. Barrier wouldn't be any the wiser.

Southern Victoria via Billingshurst is about the same as Waterloo/Portsmouth via Guildford. Quicker than Waterloo Portsmouth via Basingstoke.

National Express coach from Victoria is usually quicker than all of them to get to Portsmouth like.

Cost me 82 quid inc taxes to fly to Naples return last week minus the Eight Euro bus tickets return from naples airport. 15 quid to and from Gatwick on train funnily enough. The Ticket to Durham after 9:00am was over a hundred, one way.

Just booked Leeds to Durham this afternoon. 1hr07m journey, £40.50 single.

I got return flights to Berlin in February for £32.

Megabus is just as quick as the train if you're going to Sunderland, not an overly pleasant experience but a fraction of the price.

How on earth can using the service for a shorter period of time than you have paid for leave you liable for extra charges? Warped logic in even the mgreediest train operators minds

Victoria to Gatwick is a good opportunity to fleece unwitting tourists.

And how do they know if you get off early anyway?

Barriers won't open. See above for way round it. Still £13 up though. Ludicrous pricing policy.
