Going traveling - age

You're denying your own post. Interesting.

I'm not denying anything! I said I used to have an account on here before I moved to Australia, I did, then I forgot about it. Can you not clog up the thread with this nonsense please marra.

You didn't really 'move' to Australia though. You were on holiday.

Definitely want to do it some day, I'm 25 and I've been neewhere.

For those that have done it though, how easy is it slotting back into a career after buggering off for a year or two?
Don't know about career, but life sorted itself after two lots of quitting work and travelling. Life is what you make it. And travelling adds to a CV. I got one job because they thought i was the more interesting candidate as I'd travelled.

Haha what? I worked full time for 2 years.

You just sound jealous as fuck now like. I'm guessing you've never left Sunderland

It's better to regret something you have done, than to regret something you haven't done.

Do what makes you happy, you'll be dead soon enough.

You were visiting. You didn't 'move' there.

My guess, is that you then you came back and re-registered on the smb before being banned and have had to recently re-register again.

If you 'visit' somewhere for 2 years and end up employed in that country, I would class that as living there like. It's hardly a two week holiday.
I don't want to get involved in petty SMB arguments but I agree with this. I might say I 'moved' to Oz when I was only there for a year, I might say I 'went'. I don't give it much thought. When I 'moved' there I didn't know if it would be forever.
I quite happily say I moved into my flat when I was in it for less than two years and had no intentions of staying there long term. I don't see what the difference is.
Seems a very bizarre thing to pick up on in an otherwise pleasant and helpful thread.

It isn't bizarre at all. It relates to another thread, where he claimed that he moved to another country a number of years ago and was clearly trying to give the impression that he still lived there.

Imagine arguing with some me one about whether or not they were living somewhere or visiting somewhere  Technically anywhere you are at any time you are living there.

I was living in Australia for best part of a year like, even though I only worked for about five months.

Seems very odd to the casual observer but carry on if it makes you happy.
Might be an argument better suited to the thread you referred to.

What ever age you go, you get something different out of it, so I would say there is no age to go. An 18-21 year old will likely party their whole way round. Someone older will likely see more of the area and experience more. Being older you probably have more cash free for it.

I remember being in South Africa on a safari tour, when I was about 28. There was a group of 4 Swiss lads who were 20 and has signed up because that is what people do in South Africa. We saw some amazing wildlife but they missed loads of it because they had headphones on and were playing with hand-held computer games (pre smart phone!). They had no interest at all but felt they had to have said they went on safari. Live wild cheetahs right next to our safari van and they didn't care. One evening a ranger we got chatting to offered to take us on a night walk from the camp. That was brilliant, but they chose beer around the fire.

I had planned to go travelling after Uni, but took a job while waiting for my younger girlfriend to finish her degree. She then wanted at least a year of work, by which time I had been offered a higher paid professional role. We took 4 weeks to go to Hong Kong and a long Australia trip blowing everything we had been saving for a year out. Although I have not regretted getting on the career, marriage and mortgage track I wish I had found a year to travel. When I was 21 and just graduated, I had to loan £200 from my parents for a rental house deposit to see me through to my first pay packet, so I probably would not have got much further than Dover.

My life ambition now is retire at 60 (still 20 years away), have a few weeks winding down then head off travelling for at least 3 months.

I was working full time and was sponsored in a job. I decided to leave as I wanted to work in London.

How petty is this? I am not even sure why I am responding. I guess you are jealous, is my thinking.

I'm really not sure what is going on here like! Sounds like maybe his lass dumped him for an Australian lad or something

 haha no I didn't, you are a bit mad like.

I'm 30 in a few months and if I came into a decent sum of money, the first thing I would do is go travelling. I've currently got no house, car, girlfriend or kids but why wait around for those to happen when you could be experiencing some unforgettable things?

Sorry to (kinda) jump on this thread, but the replies are class and I'm hoping someone can give an opinion on my situation:

I'm 23, got a decentish job (on £23k) and over the next few years have good chances of promotion to the next grade. I've considered saving to travel - I have 10k from a bond but it's from parents so I'd have to keep this for a house deposit. Literally the only concern I have about travelling once I've saved is that I'll come back and not be able to find a decent job. Am I being an idiot and should I just go for it once I have the money?
