Why is it a problem if there are degrees of punishment for degrees of consequence? It applies for assault cases, theft, speeding and probably plenty of other instances. It seems that you mainly think the higher penalty is too severe. That will always be debatable and different people will have different opinions, as will individual judges. But someone who causes a death by knowingly breaking the law surely doesn't deserve leniency?

Personal view is intent is much more important than consequences. As a society we've increasingly moved towards sentencing on consequences and I just don't really agree. E.g. I rape someone and they happen to be resilient and it doesn't affect them much vs I do the exact same act and they can't handle it and commit suicide. My view would be both should be sentenced equally harshly because my intent and actions were the same in both. The consequences after are almost random. I should be punished for what I did, why I did it etc not what that then resulted in.

Fair enough, but I am happy with proportionate sentencing based on consequences, else we might all get sent to jail for talking on out mobiles.

Am not getting at you here neccesarily, but the amount of posters on here coming up with excuses for a convicted sex offender is incredible.

It's a worthwhile debate. But some people have got a 'severity of sentence' debate mixed up with their own warped moral code and argued that some other cases somewhere else with different circumstances mean he was harshly treat.

I dont think people should be questioning the severity of the sentence, rather the leniency of other sentences for similar crimes. In my opinion anyone that engages in any form of sexual activity with a minor deserves atleast 6 years. The victim blaming is also absolutely pathetic.

Id have treated his appeal like those frivolous appeals in football. He pleaded guilty yet asked for an appeal? Id have added years to his sentence as he clearly isnt showing remorse.
