Circular Runways - what a cracking idea this is.......

I just watched that and was about to post a thread about it.

who will take a punt on the investment though.... talking billions

True, but it looks worth the investment and it would pay for itself long term, not just financially but also environmentally...

Things are so much more stable in when travelling in a straight line, I doubt it is such a good idea. Normal runways long and straight, circular runways would still take quite a bit of length but require the same amount of width, where is the gain?

I think its quite a gentle curve and slightly banked. 4-5 miles of a continuous circle would be very small bends...

I'd [prefer it to be steep banked and short so you end up doing half a dozen laps like the wall of death...

Even a five mile loop would have the plane turning 90 degrees in about 25 seconds, which is some going at 170mph turning 300 tons

What happens in emergencies, do the emergency vehicles chase the aircraft around depending on where it lands? i assume the gearing and tyres will have to be specific to the camber so what happens when a plane is diverted?

if the emergency vehicles are in the centre of the circle they can get to the aircraft quicker than a conventional runway

Because of the centrifugal forces the aircraft will go towards the centre of the runway.

Doesn't centrifugal force make things go away from the centre point of a turn?
If he's mixing up his centripetal and centrifugal forces, then he's clearly barking.
