Circular Runways - what a cracking idea this is.......

if the emergency vehicles are in the centre of the circle they can get to the aircraft quicker than a conventional runway

But if you know where a plane is coming from on a normal runway you know about where its gonna stop, on this it could wind up brakelessly looping around or more likely in case of hydraulics failure somewhere fairly close to the runway.

That sounds totally stupid. I don't even know where to start pulling it apart. Its nonsense.

Its been tested in Simulators man.. bound to work.

few governments should get together and find a nice empty space to build a test case runway

cant be that hard to lay a bit of tarmac
Imagine trying to land on it in fog man

Three planes can use it at once apparently

What could possibly go wrong!?

He talks about multiple takeoffs and landings at once, but at the same time no crosswinds. Those two statements are inconsistent: there's only one point on the circle at any given time that has a zero crosswind component and a headwind, and everyone would be trying to use that point - which would be constantly shifting. But in any event, if the takeoff and landing point are the same, it's effectively a single runway. Unless, of course, you want people taking off and landing with strong crosswind components, which is a really, really bad idea on a runway that already isn't straight and doesn't solve the problem in the first place - if planes could safely take off in strong crosswinds/tailwinds, there wouldn't be runway capacity issues in the first place.

Not to mention that it would be a lot noisier for people around the airport: I imagine the sound of two 777s hitting each other is pretty loud, and circular runways with chaotic approaches greatly increase the chance of that happening.

What about computer failures too so the pilot has to land the plane? All he sees is a round circle, where does he come down on it so as not to bump into the other x amount of planes going round and round!? A straight runway he can see exactly where he needs to be.

What about darkness? Straight has nice lights on so the pilots can see that the plane is doing what it is supposed to alongside the instruments. On a roundabout they wouldn't have a f***ing scooby doo if the computer is bringing them on a right course or not!?

but saving on general footprint of the airport overall.

looking at it for heathrow

If there were enough space or the political will to have a circular runway at Heathrow, there would already be more than the 2 parallel runways they already have - there would be at least 1, probably 2 crosswind runways plus a third parallel.

it would have to be an all new airport. couldn't introduce one at heathrow if they wanted to.
