I know all about the history of them, and the connection with the local council etc, I just think they're ridiculous creatures and a poor choice for NUFC.
As the council own SJP I expect it was part of the deal to get a cheaper rent

Does winning a place via finishing in the league at the correct qualifying positions count? If not then scratch off a whole host of other clubs achievements too.

Don't think so, but if the rules stipulate that finishing 2nd in the league awards you a place in the champions league then that is not the fault of the club that finishes 2nd in the league is it?
Does all our European ventures mean nothing as we didn't get there via winning the league or a cup? Makes not one bit of difference to me if I am honest, I have fond memories of playing in the Champions league and UEFA cup.
