 I didn't even notice that you had highlighted a different part at first.

Yup notice how it stands upon, even way back when, our city foresaw the coming of the Mackem and in our crest displayed our indifference to you by trampling on your colours.

A selection of the teams in the 1969 Fairs Cup

Panathanaikos
Chelsea
Rangers
Athletic Bilbao
Liverpool
Juventus
Eintracht Frankfurt
Real Zaragoza
Sporting Lisbon
Valencia
Feyenoord
Lyon
Nice
Dynamo Zagreb
Fiorentina
Rapid Bucharest
Bologna
FC Basel

Legia Warsaw
1860 Munich

Hardly a Mickey Mouse tournament
Qualification for which was determined by having a glorified car boot sale

Not particularly wanting to get dragged into yet another dull debate about the Fairs Cup but there are teams you've mentioned that didn't even finish in the top half of the table when they qualified for the 68/69 cup.

Regardless, it's ironic Sunderland fans taking the piss about us winning the fairs cup against some of the biggest clubs in Europe (at the time) when the closest you get is an away game at Swansea ;)

Despite being roughly as shit as Sunderland for most of our recent history we've managed 132 games in Europe since 1968. Sunderland have played 4

Sunderland have won more league titles, won the most recent silverware, have the biggest ever derby victory, have the record derby run, have the biggest attendance....

Yous got in it after finishing around 10th due to the 1 club city rule and Hamburg withdrew from the Cup at the 1/4 Final stage clearly a very important cup to them

Correct.

Interpretation
The castle motif goes back to earliest times. Originally the town took its name from the "New Castle" built by order of Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, in 1080 and a castle was depicted on the twelfth century common seal. The earliest surviving example of the three silver castles on a red shield, dating from about 1400, is in the window on the north side of the Chancel in St. John's Church. The castle motif is repeated in the crest which is a golden lion atop a silver castle. He is holding the golden staff of St. George's pennon. The castle stands upon a wreath of red and white leaves above a fifteenth century style helmet. The supporters, two mythical sea-horses shaded in green with gold manes, fins and tails, are a reminder that Newcastle is a seaport. Both the supporters and crest were added to the shield by grant of William Flower, Norroy King of Arms, in 1575. The motto, 'Fortiter Defendit Triumphans' ('Triumphing by Brave Defence') was adopted during the Civil War, following the stubborn defence of the town against the Scots in 1644.

I know all about the history of them, and the connection with the local council etc, I just think they're ridiculous creatures and a poor choice for NUFC.

As the council own SJP I expect it was part of the deal to get a cheaper rent

Football team based in city takes inspiration from coat of arms of said city. Bananas.

As previously mentioned I can see why you don't agree.

 Cheeky chops.

I like them to be honest, club crest resembles City crest, a nice fit for me.

Does winning a place via finishing in the league at the correct qualifying positions count? If not then scratch off a whole host of other clubs achievements too.

 Every one of our European ventures has been via the backdoor of the Fairs cup

Oh dear me, this I never knew, thanks for the information :D

Haway man, those creatures are mutants that would be barred from the Tees, look at the cut of them

Tongues poking out, eyes totally glazed over and webbed feet ..... and what's that creature in the castle waving a red & white flag?

Yeah they are supposed to be Mythical sea creatures (obviously based on sea horses) and that sir is a Lion holding aloft the flag of our great patron Saint George :D

Has Newcastle ever qualified for Europe by actually winning anything?

Don't think so, but if the rules stipulate that finishing 2nd in the league awards you a place in the champions league then that is not the fault of the club that finishes 2nd in the league is it?

Does all our European ventures mean nothing as we didn't get there via winning the league or a cup? Makes not one bit of difference to me if I am honest, I have fond memories of playing in the Champions league and UEFA cup.
