Mind we used to go in the New York Bar in Wakefield. We got in that regular that the barmaids knew us. Tambourines, Xanadu, Sailor, what a pub that was.
Pimps, Prostitutes, Transvestites, halfy halfies and us !

I've never posted before but just had to on this great thread, Third division Chesterfield away, two transit vans was supposed leave from Hendon, one of the vans was knackered so some lads just went home the rest of us piled in the already full other van, as been mentioned before no seats just body's lying everywhere but this van also stunk of horses. Away we went. Got there and lookin for somewhere to park near the ground loads of lads walking passed sure one of them had a red & scarf so we all started singing, bricks, bottles & rocks started coming our way , I was only 15 or 16 at time and was shitting it.The driver ( remember it was his van!!!) jumped out with one of them wheel braces like a big cross and the whole lot of them legged it!!!! After the match the van kept stalling and wouldn't start so we all had to keep piling out to push with the coppers trying to push us back in. Can't remember the score but remember great day out and the smell of horses !!!!!
Hell, I ne er knew we'd played Chesterfield !

Vaguely remember the mags coming through in a big removal van did the police have it on video or was it on the north east news
Saw it on Video Police footage ,like Daffy says we pulled up along side it when the coppers pulled the shutters up and they all pilled out

I might sound like a reet tart but I honestly don't feel as though I've missed out on something in life by NOT going to an away game in a box transit with no seats or windows at sides/rear!!
Some of u daft feckers actually slept overnight in them fhs !!
The 'aroma', puke, nee proper sleep, feeling rough as a badgers arse etc etc defo not for me.
Kipping on the floor of a mates uni/poly flat seems like luxury now

We have travelled in transits with three pieces as seats, posh bAstards, empty ones with no seats and 12 piled in the back, thats interesting drinking cans and everyone with a different take away after the night out. A bit more unusual was a works bus we travelled on from Spennymoor for a few seasons. Ran on red diesel, and super surs gas canisters rolling up and down the aisles for heaters. They used to swap oover drivers on the motorway going at 70 m.p.h. It seemed funny at the time.

 you're not convincing me I've missed out on something in life !!

You deserve a medal mate.

I've got scars ;) both physical & mental ;)

Think I've mentioned it before but anyway....
1st time at Eastville ( not Special Train yr, but before that), as usual got my Wakey train to Sheffield & met Sheff at 7pm Friday. On the lash & caught the usual 11.30 train ( used it every time we were south of Brum - Oxford, Bristol, Wales, Plymouth). Arrived in Bristol TM about 3 am & walked to the ground. We found ;) a gate open into their end, went in & Sheff "found" some paint spray cans. Don't think the locals were owa the moon to go into their own end & find it covered in SAFC, FTM etc.
Later in the pub nr ground we had one bar & they had other. Summink thrown & it became the Wild West:) with windows out !
Iirc Remember Sammy outside after hoying up on a pie shop window & door & it was open !!

It was a canny bar like, they had the same thing in Huddersfield- not that I was a regular like ;)

Played them at home in the cup, plenty of em came up & they got sorted. On the train back they poured off one in York, recognised me & I was getting a kicking when I was saved by the big gang of Wigan Casino northern soul boys I shared a train with after every home game ;)

It was quite something, a Saturday match with a big turn out iirc. Sunderland had one big end and there were more scattered around their end which caused a few fights before they were turfed out.
We had to go in the seats of the main stand 'cos we couldn't get any tickets.

I think we were losing 1-0 when John McPhail equalised with a penalty late on.

There was quite a bit of trouble and rumours of Derby & Leicester turning up. Some Sunderland lads were being chased outside, before the match, so we stepped in to help ...... as soon as we saw the Chesterfield lot had knives we joined in running with Sunderland.

It was like the closing scene from Benny Hill

@Reiver were you, or any others of our 'Oldies' perchance, at the Leeds v SAFC FA Cup second round replay at Boothferry Park.

If so, I think you may have some interesting stories to add to this thread.

OR relate to in this thread - Just haven't seen any yet.

;)

Never, ever, have I seen SAFC supporters so 'wound up'.

I wasn't there but I've heard the story a few times ....... another 'Coventry' by the sounds of it.

Fat neck regularly ran a transit from the Blue Bell & Podge from the Derby. Johnny was only about 19 or 20 & used his uncles license (who was in his early 40's) to hire the van. Never once queried his age. :) Usually got the van from Seaburn hire at Seaburn Stn, or Birbecks on Newcastle Rd. Not exactly luxurious travel. Usually just an old carpet hoyed in the back, which was nicked from Dame Dot flats. Used to leave at last orders on a Friday night after a full session. Get a takeaway, then (if there was low numbers ) press gang a few more to get in. Loads of times there was lads who woke up in central London who had just gone out for a Friday night woke up sober & had to find a phone box to ring their lass to explain where they where. :D Surprised you never got persuaded to go. Maybe you used to go home early on a Friday;)

As soon as I passed driving test in November 78 I used to drive to away games. Never drank and drove either so always sober. Worra bores heed:lol:.
Never knew Johnny FN was that in to footy mind and certainly wouldn't peg him as one who would organise away trip transport. Didn't know Podge then.
Barclay Boy was he ??

Podge was from Dame Dot I think, but him & his mates all drank in the Derby. Johnny Fatneck was from Fulwell, drank in the Bell. Johnny used to go to matches in late 70's. Home & away. Mind you he'll have been making money on the deals. He got time for a incident in consett at a punk gig (the rebels) about 1979??? When he come out he got in with a different crowd & was into "liberating" Rail tickets, which loads used to get to away games, amongst other scams. (RIP)

I remember getting the train back to Wakey from Sheff U, mid 80's?, packed with SAFC "casuals" - turned out I'd paid more from 30 miles away than any of them. Was told someone got hold of the books of slips where you wrote your own destination & date & BR just swopped them for train tickets ;)

That is completely spot on. He used to sell them in the Brewery Tap. Loads used them.

I only knew Podge from when he lived in Roker

Went to Brighton with them, must have been 200 on the train with 'paper, travel agent' tickets. No idea how the inspector didn't get suspicous.
How did these tickets/slips of paper actually "work" ???

Crossed swords with who I found out later was fat neck and some of his mates at Oldham away iirc , the match when loads of ours legged it over the pitch.

Fast forward to a couple of months later to a reserve match at RP and we got a dig from a big group of our own fans in the car park after the match , in that group was amongst others was fat neck and Podge , well out numbered we had to bid farewell rather quickly.

Like many others I knew Podge by sight and got craicing on to him one day and we both ended up having a good laugh about it , iirc fat neck passed away relatively young , suicide possibly ?

They were issued by British Rail to travel agents.

You would go into a travel agent and buy a ticket to say London KX, and the girl would write it out in pen then stamp it.

The tickets in question were being sold in a Sland pub, all with TA stamp.
