I've met some truly mad Sunderland supporters .....

Many clubs did have organised groups of hooligans, IMO we didn't. We were just a big support who would fight their corner if need be. We looked after each other when we were away. Apart from Boro away and the mags at home I don't remember us causing any trouble.
Other posters may disagree but I am talking from my experience and I didn't know the vauxies etc.
Remember that in those days trouble was nearly always guaranteed. If we were faced with it we nearly always dealt with it apart from some London games.
The organised stuff for us came after my time.

Just seen this. Must say my background involved a degree of violence but have to tell you I do not like violence full stop. I will however buy the book, thanks.
The book can be bought on iBooks for a fiver and no problem your welcome.

I think many people think the threat of sectarian violence or at least serious violence has gone,it hasn't.
Anyhow did you ever come across the Chilton Trojans ( Sunderland supporters) during your excursions ? All skin heads, my grandad ( served for 35 years ) used to get a bottle of whiskey bought for him on Xmas because he used to be on the door at the legion. He didn't like the fuckers though because they wore nazi and SS gear.
Great Lumley way? If so I vaguely knew about them but from years back. Never knew that they were SAFC fans but they caused quite a bit of bother back in the day locally.

Prominent light coloured sheepskin wearers were Cal from Whitburn, Gram from Grindon,Davey? Aka Celtic.
Its Davey Jopling who was Celtic.
Being on of the 3 above I can tell you I had 2 sheepskins,1 for the match and 1 for best.Used to sweat like fuck in the summer though.

Are you from Great Lumley ?
No, down the road in CLS. However family on my mothers side were from Lumley (and Ushaw Moor/Langley).

Was Davey also known as Skin?

SMB should be above threads glorifying football violence.

Past or present.

Eyup, Wanker alert.

Are you from Great Lumley ? I had family lived in Medway.
Medway? Know the street well. I used to work for the local council once upon a time in the council house rents section. My grandparents used to live on Lumley Front Street when the pit houses were there (potty under the bed job) and moved to Broadviews. Other family members live at Tintagel.

Grandparents are buried in Lumley cemetery.

Small world. They were called Woods or more probably Wood.

No they were from the village of Chilton. About 7 miles from Darlo and about 5-6 from Spenny ( as I remember Darlington and Spennymore being called). I remember a poster saying there was a documentary done about them on the local tele as well. Anyhow I have no connections to them apart from memories of them in my childhood (They used to kick in the local Mods). They were hard core Sunderland supporters though.

Ah right. Yes, this all rings a bell now. IIRC these lads came through CLS years ago and smashed up one of the bars and filled in the bouncers at a bar called Chesters at the top of the street. Donkeys years ago this mind - late 80's?

No just Celtic
I remember going to Leicester mid 80's - the game we got relegated - Wednesday night maybe with a load of lads from the town. A lad called Skin was in amongst them but I thought he also supported Celtic. Must be getting them mixed up and maybe both were there.

Wouldn't have been Davey/Celtic mate he had moved away by then.
Skins were gone by mid 70's, proper ones that's is not the later version that appeared during the punk era.
I remember when Celtic turned skin, up till then he had shoulder length hair.

Spot on. They were around from the late seventies onwards I think. The village used to have a carnival once a year ....jazz bands and stuff like that. One year they turned up and a young copper got set upon. He was set on fire but luckily only his hair was burned. Sounds mad I know. Over the years a lot of them got sent down. One got done for attacking a transgender politician in another town. Another got done for manslaughter he killed his girlfriend.
They had some right nasty characters.

yeh skin still around hes a celtic fan as well ....roker park v rangers wheatshief pub full of us n rangers wen skin stood at the door in a celtic top goading 100s hell on it led to that battle on roker avenue minutes later fact
