This is great thread reading all the stories can remember many a time pulling up at motor way services seeing transits or similar unloading as many as 15 fans out of the back with only the driver being sober..am sure the hire companies put a stop to hiring such vans, obviously this was pre seat belt eraJust to maybe jog a few memories. I mentioned Micklefield earlier. A crowd of us used to travel everywhere in a transit van ( no windows) just pile in - between 10 and 12 of us (maybe more) and gallons of beer. Had some crazy adventures. On the way back to Sunderland we would stop off in Micklefield in Yorkshire and get even more pissed, scrap with the locals, have a run in with the local constabulary and home. Great days. Talking here like late 70's

Actually the younger fan from the last ten years will cherish the memories that championship football brings, huge followings goals etc, not trying to be negative but those were good days in Yorkshire etc.Threads like this make me realise how much I bloody love away games - although i have no tales to boast about getting in scraps (should of had my head kicked in at Newcastle last year mind) or being chased by rival fans - I love the people you meet and the situations you find yourself in.
I honestly can't wait for a few smaller lower league grounds next season if we go down - massive allocations and a journey to some cheaper northern towns and cities look on the horizon. Can't wait!!
Never, in the field of supporting Sunderland, have so many people owed so much to so few ..... that lad lifted the spirits of 10,000 of us that day.
Hull many years ago, can't remember much bother before and during but afterwards it kicked off in the town whilst drinking down the hours for the bus, I can remember a boy from Peterlee I know his name putting this Hull kid through the local pictures front window, I think he's still there.
Gilly had a seat next to us in front row of the North stand during the early days of the SoL, a right character. He'd never be in the seat til at least 20 mins of the match had gone. You'd see him appear down the front of the South stand and slowly drag his arse round the front of the East stand til he finally got to his seat, usually rat-arsed and with gravy stains round his gob.I used to love it back in the day when The SAFCSA ran Watsons buses from Stanley and Gilly would travel with us regaling us with tales of the Stanley Pirates. A genuinely funny lad and daft as the proverbial ships cat.

The Peterlee lads name rhymes with Rocky, he'll be late fifties early sixties a very game lad as I recallWe know one of the lads, who posts on here, as Glen the Merciless because of the first match of the season when we lost 3 nowt.
Our minibus was bricked and we piled out to express our dismay ....... Glen cornered a Hull hooligan who pleaded not to be beaten up as he'd already been beaten up before the game.
Glen battered him anyway ...... hence the nickname![]()
Look at all them victories eh!Well that includes me, I've only been going to away games in the PL (really last three years) and seen us win less then a handful of times. My best experiences have been far away from the football. I'd love to have been there in the days of drinking in the likes of Sheffield/ Leeds/ Preston etc... and seeing us win in between.
Its looking alright wIth a good chance of Bradford, Bolton, Scunthorpe and Sheffield United coming up from league one - and Leeds, Huddesfield, Preston, Blackburn, Wigan, Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheff Wednesday, Nottingham, Derby, Burton, Wolves and the Birmingham clubs still hanging around
It's tales like what you are reading here that cements our support as one of the best in the land. We travel a lot further than most, take a lot more than most and get behind the lads and enjoy ourselves. More often than not a short trip to an away game ended up as a full weekend away.Well that includes me, I've only been going to away games in the PL (really last three years) and seen us win less then a handful of times. Tbh mate, I can't ever remember Sunderland supporters making me feel ashamed ......... looking at this board makes me believe there are a few who are desperate to feel ashamed at our support. It's tales like what you are reading here that cements our support as one of the best in the land. We were not trouble makers but in an age when there was lots of trouble we would look after each other. Oh and remember, most of the time we were shyte.
