Rafael Benítez

Good post.

I think the team that played 28 games under McClaren were bereft of confidence, but the team that emerged under Rafa certainly had more in the way of cojones. Lascelles, Townsend, Mad-Mitrovic and even Sissoko seemed to find a set for the last few home games.

We'll need to address key weaknesses in the squad, but we've money to spend, and once a few go, we'll have more. I'm confident of promotion with or without Benitez at the helm.

Who's gonna address the delusion on the terraces?

Ya a mid table championship side.....

The mags struggled this season with their 'star' players only turning up when they felt like it. Yes they turned it on vs a spurs team who had given up, or a few games at home or on the tele but most of their away games, or battles with other bottom teams, they never bothered.
The championship is a hard slog of 46 games, no glamour matches. They'd need a serious overhaul of the squad and mentality to do well Imo, rafa or no rafa.

Not only that, some of the teams Benitez was playing had naff all to play for.

Agreed, this is also a varying factor which is why I keep saying to people that if they directly compare McClaren and Benitez over the same opponents there is only a very marginal improvement provable. Anything else is solely based on their belief that results will improve. Belief with no evidence...what do they call that again? Oh yeah...delusion.

46 games plus they'll go all the way in two Cup comps......

What I was saying was whatever Benitez improved he ultimately failed. He had 10 games, Advocaat had 9 games and Di Canio had 8 games. Advocaat inherited us in a far worse position than Newcastle were and in both cases Newcastle had far better players than we had. I understand that Newcastle want Benitez as he seems to wield a bit of influence but so far he ain't done a good job - he failed in what he was brought in to do and many other managers have succeeded in such circumstances with poorer resources at their disposal. We wanted to keep Advocaat because against the odds he saved us, not because of any past record and we were wrong. To me, with Newcastle, it's the perennial desire to be seen as a 'big club' - in the past the likes of Allardyce, Pardew and Hughton were never seen as good enough for Newcastle but if someone who has managed Real Madrid and Inter Milan (regardless of how he did there) then the Mags see it as 'a good fit'.
Excellent post and should be end of thread. The mags on here might as well read this and fuck off. Nothing more needs to be said.

Living in one of the most football (soccer) obsessed cities in North America I can wholeheartedly say no one here gives a shit about Newcastle.

There's a handful of supporters, about as many as there are MLFs, and they all have personal reasons to support the mags (family etc). Now they're not in the PL it's as if they don't exist. No TV coverage, nothing. I had to go out of my way to keep up with what was happening in the championship at the back end of this season.....no one here cares about it.

If they're a global brand, no one told US soccer fans about it.
Same in Hong Kong in my experience. Global brand ffs!:lol:

I've seen it all now. Chronicles Lee Ryder quoting Nobby Solano as saying this is the biggest day since Sir Bobby Robson arrived.
OMG

"Looks like" Rafa to sine for 3 more years at Sid James's Park. TalkShite at 16:34.
Still not definitive.
Still not sined.

I've addressed this line a lot on here. Benitez GpG is better than Di Canio, Allardyce and only nominally worse than Advocaat. But in isolation that doesn't tell the whole story, about what Allardyce inherited, what the 15/16 league was like. But I fear you're underestimating the size of the job Benitez took on.

I think that if money was the only motivator he'd have fucked off to Saudi Arabia, or China, or Russia and swam in his money pile, Scrooge McDuck style.
Size of the job he took on? f***ing hell, you weren't 10 points adrift and hadnt spent a penny over the season ffs. You couldn't beat us, Norwich or Villa with Rafa. Couldn't give a shiney shite about hammering Spurs, you were already down and deservedly so.

How bizarre is that? Did you do that table yourself? You must have done. Hilarious the lengths you are going to make out Benitez out to be a success. The difference is that Allardyce, Advocaat and Di Canio were brought in to save their teams and succeeded. Benitez was brought in to do that and failed. It is also pretty clear that he had better players at his disposal - look at the 5-1 against Spurs which skews your figures. And yet despite his relative failure you still wheel out all the excuses. I'm not saying he is the wrong choice, that remains to be seen but I've heard people say 'he did a marvellous job' and he clearly didn't. He failed in the task he was set unlike the Sunderland managers you compare him to - that, I'm afraid chum, is FACT.

He wasn't successful in keeping us up, but I'm not blaming the firefighter for some arsehole burning my house down.

The Advocaat thing is wheeled out time and again and it's really silly. Different circumstances, different league situations, different team mentalities, different everything to be honest.

The last bit is projection, you do this to distance yourself from your rivals. There needs to be something different and unpalatable, because then it's easy to hate them, even if it's mostly made up. Common practise in the armed forces.

For example, nobody wanted Hughton out, we were happy with the football, his demeanour and his professionalism. But Newcastle fans hate all southerners, right? That's what Talksport says...
My word, you'll be saying no Newcastle fans wanted Bobby Robson out next.
